Im März 1908 wandert ein junger Mann übers Gebirge in ein abgelegenes Tiroler Tal. Der mittlerweile 30 Jahre alte Kaspar kehrt nach zwanzigjähriger Abwesenheit aus den Staaten in seine Heimat, an das Sterbebett seines Vaters zurück. Inzwischen ist er Journalist und setzt alles daran, das schreckliche Schwabengehen öffentlich anzuprangern. Im Jahr 1885 musste Kaspar, wie auch viele andere Kinder aus ärmsten Verhältnissen, ins Schwabenland ziehen und sich dort den Sommer über verdingen. Kaspar erzählt von dem gefahrvollen, entbehrungsreichen Weg über tief verschneite endlose Passhöhen, um dann in Ravensburg auf dem Kindermarkt feilgeboten zu werden wie ein Skalve; von der harten Arbeit bei dem tyrannischen Bauern Steihauser, den nur die Arbeitskraft des Kindes interessiert, und vom ähnlichen Los anderer Schwabenkinder. Und er ruft die Erinnerung wach an den Tag, als er als kleiner Bub von seinem vielgeliebten Vater derb verabschiedet wurde: mit Schlägen, die ihm den Weg in die Fremde leichter machen sollten
