Niko is having a tough morning. He's broken up with his girlfriend, been cut off from his monthly allowance, and was just declared "emotionally unstable" by a court-appointed psychologist. If only he could find a decent cup of coffee. Painting an eventful day-in-the-life of a twenty-something law school dropout, A Coffee in Berlin follows Niko as he drifts through a series of absurd, funny, and, ultimately, life-changing encounters with the people and city around him. Photographed in timeless black and white and enriched by a snappy jazz soundtrack, Jan Ole Gerster's vibrant and charming debut, which swept the German Film Awards, is a slacker comedy with a poignant center, and a love-letter to the city of Berlin and Generation Y

3 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in German and held by 363 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On December 20, 1963, the Frankfurt Court of Assizes began a historic trial. On August 20, 1965, after years of investigation, the 20 months of proceedings concluded with a verdict in one of the most significant trials in German legal history. In the dock were 22 members of the Waffen-SS, who were staff members at Auschwitz. 360 witnesses, including 211 survivors of Auschwitz-Birkenau, 54 former members of the SS garrison of the camp, 34 other former SS or police officers and 61 other persons testified. Members of the court even visited Auschwitz-Birkenau--an extraordinary event--as Poland and Germany had no official relationship at the time. This trial brought the German people to grips with the collective amnesia German society had affected in the postwar period. The facts of individual involvement in crimes at Auschwitz-Birkenau were revealed, and individual responsibility for the mass murder of millions assigned. The documentary explores the investigation, the courtroom drama, and the verdict
Fanfare for America : the composer Aaron Copland( Visual )

4 editions published between 2001 and 2011 in English and held by 322 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Impressed with how European music could have a "German sound", a "French sound", and so on, Aaron Copland returned from his years in Paris to New York City, intent on capturing the essence of the "American sound." This documentary presents an artful blending of the life and music of one of America's great modern composers. The many milestones in Copland's long career are discussed by his biographer, Howard Pollock, while stirring images of Copland's native city are set to selections of his music as performed by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. FRSO conductor Hugh Wolff provides astute commentary. Many interviews with Copland are included, along with a historic recording of "Clarinet Concerto" with Benny Goodman playing and Copland conducting"--Container

Baal( Visual )

2 editions published in 2018 in German and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Volker Schlöndorff transported Bertolt Brecht's 1918 debut play to contemporary West Germany for this vicious experiment in adaptation, seldom seen for nearly half a century. Oozing with brutish charisma, Rainer Werner Fassbinder embodies the eponymous anarchist poet, who feels that bourgeois society has rejected him and sets off on a schnapps-soaked rampage. Hewing faithfully to Brecht's text, Schlöndorff juxtaposes the theatricality of the prose with bare-bones, handheld 16 mm camera work, which gives immediacy to this savage story of rebellion. Featuring a supporting cast drawn from Fassbinder's troupe of theater actors that also includes Margarethe von Trotta, Baal demonstrates the uncompromising vision of its director, a trailblazer of the New German Cinema"--Container
