Tertullian: a historical and literary study by Timothy David Barnes( Book )

31 editions published between 1971 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 926 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first part and the appendices provide the objective chronological and historical framework without which Tertullian's writings cannot be understood. In the second part this framework is used as the basis of a sympathetic but not wholly subjective interpretation of his intellectual development, of his reaction to the society in which he lived, and of his place in Latin literature
Athanasius and Constantius : theology and politics in the Constantinian empire by Timothy David Barnes( Book )

31 editions published between 1993 and 2004 in English and Undetermined and held by 782 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As the high-ranking Bishop of Alexandria from 328 to 373, Athanasius came into conflict with no fewer than four Roman emperors -- Constantine himself, his son Constantius, Julian the Apostate, and the "Arian" Valens. In this new reconstruction of Athanasius's career, Timothy D. Barnes analyzes the nature and extent of the Bishop's power, especially as it intersected with the policies of these emperors. Repeatedly condemned and deposed by church councils, the Bishop persistently resurfaced as a player to contend with in ecclesiastic and imperial politics. Barnes's work reveals that Athanasius's writings, though a significant source for this period, are riddled with deliberate misinterpretations, which historians through the ages have uncritically accepted. Untangling longstanding misconceptions, Barnes reveals the Bishop's true role in the struggles within Christianity, and in the relations between the Roman emperor and the Church at a critical juncture. - Publisher

Ammianus Marcellinus and the representation of historical reality by Timothy David Barnes( Book )

12 editions published between 1998 and 2011 in English and held by 463 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Much of what we know today of Rome in the fourth century depends on the surviving eighteen books of the Res Gestae of the historian Ammianus Marcellinus. The accuracy of Ammianus' reporting has come under question over the past fifty years, however, and Timothy D. Barnes here offers new grist for skepticism." "This is the first book on Ammianus to place equal emphasis on the literary and historical aspects of his writing. Barnes assesses Ammianus' depiction of historical reality by simultaneously investigating both the historical accuracy and the literary qualities of the Res Gestae. He examines its structure and arrangement, emphasizes its Greek, pagan, and polemical features, and points out the extent to which Ammianus drew on his imagination in shaping the narrative."--Jacket

First study of Constantine to make use of Kevin Wilkinson's re-dating of the poet Palladas to the reign of Constantine, disproving the predominant scholarly belief that Constantine remained tolerant in matters of religion to the end of his reign. Demand analysis for proposed medical services at the future naval health clinic by Timothy David Barnes( Book )

2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The purpose of this study is to determine the scope of medical services that should be provided to enrolled beneficiaries at the future Naval Health Clinic Charleston based on projected demand and demographics of the population. Twelve months of historical relative value unit (RVU) workload data were used to conduct forecasts to project the future demand for health care services in 10 specialty practices. Two independent predictive models were created using time-series analysis and utilization rates from the population of interest. Projections were evaluated against Navy Medicine annual benchmark standards for clinical practices to determine if sufficient demand existed to provide each service. Both independent methodologies indicated the need for 5 of the 10 specialty practices evaluated in the study. Results of this study suggest the demographic make-up of the targeted population likely limits the need for certain specialty services that typically serve an older population
