Looking at the overlooked : four essays on still life painting by Norman Bryson ( Book )
21 editions published between 1990 and 2013 in English and held by 750 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Historically and culturally, the societies that produced still life painting could hardly be more diverse. What is it, then, that allows us to place such different types of image in a single category? Norman Bryson argues that the family resemblances between the different types of still life stem from their common portrayal of a level of material culture that retains its fundamental outlines through long spans of time and across the boundaries and divisions of national culture: the culture of domestic routine and the rituals of hospitality. How this 'low plane reality' is historically viewed and inflected by the 'higher' levels and discourses of the surrounding culture is the fundamental subject of this book

John Currin by John Currin ( Book )
7 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 356 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
One of the leading figurative painters of his generation, Currin's influences range from Italian and Northern Renaissance paintings to popular illustrations from the mid-20th century. Whether portraits of older women, buxom girls, nudes with elongated bodies, or group scenes of domestic life, his works are characterized by baroque gestures, loose brushstrokes, unorthodox palettes, and detailed backgrounds that startle the viewer into a reconsideration of the tradition of painting. His "old master" techniques and individual style have earned him accolades from critics and collectors worldwide

Robert Therrien by Lynn Zelevansky ( Book )
3 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 290 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In this volume, which accompanies the exhibition Robert Therrien and examines the artist's work of the past decade, curator Lynn Zelevansky explores the transformation of forms that has been the hallmark of Therrien's artistic process and situates his work within contemporary art practice. Essayist Thomas Frick discusses the work vis-a-vis the formalist tradition in art and examines the paradoxical nature of its abstract and figurative aspects. In the volume's third and final essay, art historian Norman Bryson investigates the visceral effect of Therrien's sculpture on the viewer, relating its effects to the corporeal invasions and restitutions found in animated cartoons."--BOOK JACKET
