Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) is perhaps the most important figure in the history of the visual arts in America. Many experts revere Stieglitz as the greatest photographer ever, and his prints have established world-record prices at auction. But he was also a great discoverer and promoter of photographers and artists in other media, as well as a great publisher, patron, and collector. Through both the excellence of his own work and his militant advocacy, Stieglitz won widespread acceptance of photography as a fine art. He was the publisher and editor in chief of Camera Work, a magnificently produced magazine devoted not only to photography but also to modernist art. At his gallery, "291," he presented the first American exhibitions of Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse, and Brancusi - and he was the first to show the work of Georgia O'Keeffe, whom he would marry in 1924

"Heart of Spain is the first volume to be devoted entirely to the finest of Robert Capa's photographs from the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and features many never-before-published images, including selections from Capa's long-lost contact sheets." "In addition to over one hundred duotone images by Capa, Heart of Spain also features rare photographs by Gerda Taro, and three compelling essays that place Robert Capa's photographs within their cultural and historical milieu. Juan P. Fusi Aizpurua draws our attention to the intellectual climate of an era when artists and writers still-dared to consider their labor revolutionary. Using Capa's photographs as a starting point, Catherine Coleman, curator of photographs at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, examines the radical social changes that took place in women's lives during the war. Richard Whelan, Capa's biographer, elaborates on the photographer's travels in Spain and on the creation of a body of work that would prove seminal in the development of Capa's photographic career."--Jacket

This is war : Robert Capa at work by Richard Whelan( Book )
8 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 270 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Robert Capa, one of the preeminent photographers of the twentieth century, was a master of the cinematic photo narrative. His most striking images-of the Spanish Civil War, of the Sino-Japanese conflict, of World War II - appeared in the pages of the leading picture magazines of the day. Many of his most well-known photographs have come to define significant historical moments. It was their broad circulation in international picture magazines that first made them iconic. Some of the most visually sophisticated and politically engaged European and American magazines of the mid-century published Capa's photographs of war, including Vu, Regards, Match, Picture Post, and, of course, Life. This book and the exhibition it accompanies reexamine Capa's innovations as a photojournalist in the 1930s and 1940s. Vintage prints, contact sheets, caption sheets, handwritten observations, personal letters, and original magazine layouts reveal Capa's working process in the construction of six key photo stories."--Jacket
