De Arte Gymnastica by Girolamo Mercuriale (1530-1606), originally published in 1569, was one of the earliest books to discuss the therapeutic value of gymnastics and sports of all kinds for the cure of disease and disability. The first part of the work consisted of a history of Greek and Roman gymnasia, and exercise practices. It followed Mercuriale's historical approach to medical subjects as one of the first medical historians of the Renaissance. The second part discussed the hygienic and medical aspects of exercise from the critical standpoint of the physician. Mercuriale was one of the first to suggest that an exercise might be either helpful or harmful depending on its use, duration and intensity. On the basis of research, he recommended or prohibited physical activities, described them in detail, suggested proper equipment, and outlined training schedules and techniques. Mercuriale's work was very popular, going through five editions after its original appearance, including an English translation published in the mid-19th century
