An introduction to chaotic dynamical systems by
Robert L Devaney(
Book
)
54 editions published between 1985 and 2003 in 4 languages and held by 1,561 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The study of nonlinear dynamical systems has exploded in the past 25 years, and Robert L. Devaney has made these advanced research developments accessible to undergraduate and graduate mathematics students as well as researchers in other disciplines with the introduction of this widely praised book. In this second edition of his bestselling text, Devaney includes new material on the orbit diagram from maps of the interval and the Mandelbrot set, as well as striking color photos illustrating both Julia and Mandelbrot sets. This book assumes no prior acquaintance with advanced mathematical topics such as measure theory, topology, and differential geometry. Assuming only a knowledge of calculus, Devaney introduces many of the basic concepts of modern dynamical systems theory and leads the reader to the point of current research in several areas. "Incorporating an innovative modeling approach, this text for a onesemester differential equations course emphasizes conceptual understanding to help students relate information taught in the classroom to realworld experiences. Going beyond a traditional emphasis on technique, the authors focus on understanding how differential equations are formulated and interpreting their meaning to applied models from a variety of disciplines. A threepronged qualitative, numeric, and analytic approach stresses visualizing differential equations geometrically, utilizing the latest computational technology to investigate the behavior of solutions, and predicting the behavior of solutions as they apply to models. The presentation weaves various points of view together so students become adept at moving between different representations to solve nonlinear differential equations equally well as traditional linear equations. Certain models reappear throughout the text as running themes to synthesize different concepts from multiple angles, and a dynamical systems focus emphasizes predicting the longterm behavior of these recurring models. Students will discover how to identify and harness the mathematics they will use in their careers, and apply it effectively outside the classroom."

13 editions published between 1989 and 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 245 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Robert Devaney communicates his deep understanding as well as his enthusiasm for chaos, fractals, and dynamical systems. Starting at a level suitable for wellprepared high school students, he tells the mathematical story behind these fascinating topics. Equations and graphs are clearly shown with computergenerated characters, and Devaney's explanations are lucid and instructive. Illustrating the mathematics are forays into the colorful, unpredictable world of fractals and Julia sets. Devaney explains how the computer is used to generate the pictures and shows how the various colors are chosen for graphical representations ... Though the mathematical background required is elementary, those at the collegiate level and beyond will appreciate ... the clarity of exposition and the sheer beauty of the graphics."Container

The Science of fractal images by
M. F Barnsley(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1988 in Undetermined and English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
This book is based on notes for the course Fractals:lntroduction, Basics and Perspectives given by MichaelF. Barnsley, RobertL. Devaney, HeinzOtto Peit gen, Dietmar Saupe and Richard F. Voss. The course was chaired by HeinzOtto Peitgen and was part of the SIGGRAPH '87 (Anaheim, California) course pro gram. Though the five chapters of this book have emerged from those courses we have tried to make this book a coherent and uniformly styled presentation as much as possible. It is the first book which discusses fractals solely from the point of view of computer graphics. Though fundamental concepts and algo rithms are not introduced and discussed in mathematical rigor we have made a serious attempt to justify and motivate wherever it appeared to be desirable. Ba sic algorithms are typically presented in pseudocode or a description so close to code that a reader who is familiar with elementary computer graphics should find no problem to get started. Mandelbrot's fractal geometry provides both a description and a mathemat ical model for many of the seemingly complex forms and patterns in nature and the sciences. Fractals have blossomed enormously in the past few years and have helped reconnect pure mathematics research with both natural sciences and computing. Computer graphics has played an essential role both in its de velopment and rapidly growing popularity. Conversely, fractal geometry now plays an important role in the rendering, modelling and animation of natural phenomena and fantastic shapes in computer graphics
