The New Grove gospel, blues, and jazz, with spirituals and ragtime by Paul Oliver( Book )

27 editions published between 1986 and 1997 in 3 languages and held by 917 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The chapters of this book are in roughly chronological sequence: Spirituals, Blues, Gospel, Ragtime, and Jazz. The first three are by Paul Oliver, whose New Grove entry on the Blues is widely regarded as the definitive brief history of the genre. He has revised and expanded it for this book publication and, in addition, has extended the coverage of his essays on Spirituals in The New Grove to discuss both black and white traditions. Similarly, Oliver has revised and recast his coverage of Gospel music, which has been considerably expanded. Max Harrison's long entry on Jazz, which has also been extended, draws together the separate strands of the book to discuss the concept of Jazz as a matrix of mutually influential folk and popular styles. William Bolcom's short and definitive article on Ragtime has been revised, and all the bibliographies have been updated to include new and important works."--Back cover
Songs of innocence and of experience by William Bolcom( Recording )

14 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 754 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

[This book] combines extreme simplicity of form with complex and mysterious meanings.... In literary terms, [the author] conceived the [book] in a popular genre of illustrated children's books and hymnals, which had a highly conventional eighteenth-century tradition behind it.... Part One largely conforms to the tradition, set in a sunlit, pastoral world of nursery, garden and village-green. Its central ideas are those of joy, comfort, tenderness and parental or divine security; though not exclusively so. Part Two largely subverts the traditions, set in a darker, more dreamlike version of the same landscape with nightmare intimations, glimpses of forests and shadowy city streets, a sense of twilight and nightfall, and menacing animal and insect shapes. Here the central ideas are those of anger, jealousy, anxiety, cruelty, injustice, and an overwhelming protest against the unhappiness in the world. Though again, not exclusively or hopelessly so. -Introd
The aesthetics of survival : a composer's view of twentieth-century music by George Rochberg( Book )

8 editions published between 1984 and 1988 in English and held by 693 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book, the author addresses the legacy of modernism in music and its related effect on the cultural milieu, particularly its overemphasis on the abstract, rationalist thinking embraced by contemporary science, technology, and philosophy. Rochberg argues for the renewal of holistic values in order to ensure the survival of music as a humanly expressive art."--Jacket
