By the beginning of the twentieth century, Claude Monet was a figure of national importance in France - the patriarch of impressionism and the country's foremost landscape painter. This richly illustrated book examines for the first time the body of work that Monet completed from 1900 until his death in 1926, a period during which he was enormously productive, increasingly wealthy, and ever more venerated
Claude Monet : life and art by Paul Hayes Tucker ( Book )
12 editions published between 1995 and 1997 in English and held by 1,146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The quintessential Impressionist Claude Monet created more than 2,500 paintings, drawings, and pastels that radically altered the way art was made and understood. This beautiful book is a comprehensive - and accessible - study of Monet's achievement which sets his rich legacy into the context of his life and times. Instead of reading Monet's work as engaged only with the beauties of nature, Paul Hayes Tucker offers strikingly new perspectives based on a close examination of individual paintings, Monet's biography, and the multiple forces that shaped his aesthetic. Tucker sees the artist's oeuvre as an evolving enterprise that was intricately linked to such cataclysmic events as the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune insurrection of 1870-71, the Dreyfus Affair of 1898, and the First World War. Tucker also explores the demands that Monet placed upon himself, his responses to market pressures, and his steadfast belief in the power of art to express ideas. Combining documentary material with a thorough analysis of the public's reaction to his work, Tucker convincingly demonstrates how Monet was able to achieve enormous success during his lifetime

The impressionists at Argenteuil by Paul Hayes Tucker ( Book )
6 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 696 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"With the exception of Paris, no other site is more closely associated with the birth of impressionism than Argenteuil. Only fifteen minutes by railroad from the heart of the capital, Argenteuil was home to Claude Monet from late 1871 to early 1878, a period that was prolific and revolutionary. It was during his time in Argenteuil that Monet developed his unique vision of landscape painting, at once authentic and idyllic, suffused with light, atmosphere, and the complexities of contemporaneity. At the end of the nineteenth century, other avant-garde painters - Eugene Boudin, Gustave Caillebotte, Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley - were also drawn to Argenteuil by its beauty, its proximity to Paris, and its association with suburban recreation. Monet's amiable presence was another source of appeal, and many artists - most notably Sisley and Renoir - came to paint alongside him. The Impressionists at Argenteuil explores the fertile moment when the fascination with atmospheric effects, depictions of modern life, and lively artistic exchanges of the 1860's coalesced to become classic impressionism. An introductory essay as well as entries on fifty-two paintings by Boudin, Caillebotte, Manet, Monet, Renoir, and Sisley present the richness of the artists' individual responses to this site and the relationships that developed among them."--Jacket

Manet's Le déjeuner sur l'herbe by Édouard Manet ( Book )
10 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 577 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Edouard Manet's controversial painting Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe is one of the best-known images in French art. The subject of critical analysis for more than a century, it still defies singular interpretations. This book offers six different readings of the painting. Based on new ideas about its context, production, meaning, and reception, these essays, written specially for this volume by leading scholars of French modern art, incorporate close examinations of the picture's radical style and novel subject, relevant historical developments, and archival material, as well as biographical evidence that prompts psychological inquiries. Shedding new light on the artist and the touchstone work of modernism, Manet's "Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe" also introduces readers to current methodologies in art history and to the multiple ways that this complex painting can be framed."--BOOK JACKET
