Jazz on a summer's day by Bert Stern( Visual )

39 editions published between 1950 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 731 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Enshrined in the National Film Registry in 1999, Bert Stern's 1959 film offers precisely what its title promises. Along with a wealth of great music, the film subtly conveys the economic differences between the music's origins and Newport's wealthy citizens, and highlights the concentration and playfulness of great musicians by photographing them as intimately as possible. Despite the title, this concert film's performances--captured over the course of a weekend during the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival--really shine when night falls. As a documentary, it stylishly immortalizes transcendently beautiful music played on a glorious day, suggesting in the process that film might have no higher purpose

Bert Stern : original mad man by Bert Stern( Visual )

2 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bert Stern: original mad man is the definitive voyage into the life and work of one of the greatest American photographers of all time. An original Madison Avenue "mad man," Stern's images helped create modern advertising; his ground-breaking campaign for Smirnoff forever changed the industry. The iconic photos he took of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine, Sophia Loren, Twiggy, and the infamous Lolita image from Kubrick's film, minted Stern - along with Irving Penn and Richard Avedon - as a celebrity in his own right. Indeed, his photos from Monroe's "Last Sitting" are considered to be the ultimate images of the 20th century icon. After marrying legendary ballet dancer and Balanchine muse Allegra Kent, the kid from Brooklyn was sitting on top of the world ... until a dramatic fall from grace. Featuring Bert Stern, Allegra Kent, Twiggy Lawson, Jerry Della Femina, Judith Crist, George Wein & more

Marilyn Monroe by Norman Mailer( Book )

11 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in 5 languages and held by 75 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

TASCHEN has paired Mailer's original text (his 1973 biography Marilyn) with Bert Stern's extraordinary photographs- widely considered the most intimate ever taken of Monroe- to create a fitting tribute to the woman who, at the time of her death in 1962, was the world's most famous, a symbol of glamour and eroticism for an entire generation. But though she was feted and adored by her public, her private life was that of a little girl lost, desperate to find love and security. Mailer's Marilyn is beautiful, tragic, and complex. As Mailer reflects upon her life- from her bleak childhood through to the mysterious circumstances of her death - she emerges as a symbol of the bizarre decade during which she reigned as Hollywood's greatest female star. This book, conceived by Lawrence Schiller, Mailer's collaborator on five works, combines the author's masterful text with Stern's penetrating images of the 36-year-old Marilyn. Photographed for Vogue magazine over three days at the Bel-Air Hotel, Marilyn had never allowed such unfettered access, nor had she looked so breathtakingly beautiful. Six weeks later, mysteriously, she was dead. In this bold synthesis of literary classic and legendary portrait sitting, Mailer and Stern lift the veils of confusion surrounding Monroe - the woman, the star, the sex symbol - and offer profound insight into an iconic figure whose true personality remains an enigma even today

Bert Stern : adventures by Bert Stern( Book )

4 editions published in 1997 in English and French and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bert Stern: Adventures captures in a sweeping array of images the remarkable career of Bert Stern, one of the legendary figures in contemporary photography. Stern's meteoric rise in the 1950s advertising world is represented by such classic images as his vodka advertisement in which an Egyptian pyramid is seen inverted in a martini glass. His portraits of stars ranging from Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn to Drew Barrymore, including the spellbinding 1962 "last sitting" photographs of Marilyn Monroe, form a gallery of the most beautiful women of our time. In the 1960s, he became the American prototype of the fashion photographer as media star, and his pictures of models from Twiggy to Iman have become icons to a new generation of photographers. In all Stern's work can be seen the remarkable graphic simplicity of his photographic art, as well as his extraordinary rapport with his subjects. Robert Sobieszek's text recounts the story of Stern's rise from a Brooklyn childhood to the pinnacle of success and glamour in Manhattan, and his spectacular fall from grace, while analyzing Stern's achievement and establishing its context in the recent history of commercial photography. Driven by an obsession with beautiful women, Stern lived on the edge, and when his commercial empire crumbled in the 1970s, he dropped from sight. Since the early 1980s, he has reestablished his career, though at a less frenetic pace, while his earlier work has undergone the reevaluation that has led to this retrospective volume
