Abul Ala Al-Maarri was a blind Arab philosopher, poet, and writer. Born in modern day Maarrat al-Nuʿman, Syria, he studied at Aleppo, Tripoli and Antioch. Producing popular poems in Baghdad, he nevertheless refused to sell his texts. [..] Described as a "pessimistic freethinker", Al-Maʿarri was a controversial rationalist of his time, citing reason as the chief source of truth. He was pessimistic about life describing himself as "a double prisoner" of blindness and isolation. He attacked the dogmas of religion and rejected Islam. He was equally sarcastic towards the religions of Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians. He advocated social justice, and lived a secluded, ascetic lifestyle. [...] Resalat Al-Ghufran, meaning The Epistle of Forgiveness, is a famous Arabic book from the 10th century written by Abul ʿAla Al-Maarri . It is a book of divine comedy that concentrates on the Arabic poetical civilization but in a way that touches all aspects of life. The most interesting characteristics of Risalat Al-Ghufran are its genius digression, deep philosophy, and brilliant language. Some say that the Risalat Al-Ghufran has clearly had an influence on, or has even inspired, Alighieri Dante's Divine Comedy. -- from https://en.wikipedia.org (Dec. 8, 2015)

The epistle of forgiveness or : a pardon to enter the garden by Abū al-ʻAlāʼ al-Maʻarrī( Book )

14 editions published between 2013 and 2016 in English and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the most unusual books in classical Arabic literature, The Epistle of Forgiveness is the lengthy reply by the prolific Syrian poet and prose writer, Abū l-'Alā al-Ma'arrī (d. 449 H/1057 AD), to a letter by an obscure grammarian, Ibn al-Qāriḥ. With biting irony, The Epistle of Forgiveness mocks Ibn al-Qāriḥ's hypocrisy and sycophancy by imagining he has died and arrived with some difficulty in Heaven, where he meets famous poets and philologists from the past. He also glimpses Hell, and converses with the Devil and various heretics. Al-Ma'arrī--a maverick, a vegan, and often branded a heretic himself--seems to mock popular ideas about the Hereafter"--
