Social capital a multifaceted perspective by Partha Dasgupta( )
36 editions published between 1999 and 2005 in English and Chinese and held by 1,819 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
""Social capital initially derives from social theory, and from the broad idea that social relationships are resources that help people act effectively"--A definition by the late James Coleman, one of the first social scientists to use the term in the 1970s." "Social capital has since then quickly entered the common vernacular of our discussions about the connectedness of citizens to their community. It remains, however, a concept that is not easily defined. There lies the impetus for this book, which presents theoretical and empirical studies of social capital by a roster of leading sociologists, economists, and political scientists. It is an outgrowth of a workshop, held at the World Bank in April 1997, which was devoted to exploring the concept of social capital through a multidisciplinary forum."--Jacket

The economics of non-convex ecosystems by Partha Dasgupta( )
20 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 979 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Economists all too often assume that ecosystem and population dynamics are subject to convex (even linear) processes. However, research by ecosystem and population ecologists has shown that the processes in question are very often non-convex. This has important implications for environmental and resource economics. Typically, a system under study or being managed would contain multiple basins of attraction. So the system would flip from one basin to another if a "threshold" (mathematically, a bifurcation) were crossed. Furthermore, the flip could be irreversible. But even if it were reversible, the system could well display hysteresis. The latter eventuality means that in order to entice the system to return to its original basin of attraction, a different and possibly costly path has to be traced. A mistake in management may then be a lot more costly than envisaged. An example would be a possible flip of the Gulf Stream owing to fresh water intrusion from melting glaciers during global warming
Human well-being and the natural environment by Partha Dasgupta( Book )
34 editions published between 2001 and 2007 in English and Japanese and held by 778 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In Human Well-Being and the Natural Environment, Partha Dasgupta explores ways to measure the quality of life. Although the problem pervades a number of academic disciplines, it is not confined to the academic realm. International organizations regularly publish cross-country estimates of the quality of life, journalists and commentators publicize them, and national governments are obliged to take note of them. Today, quality-of-life indices broker political arguments and together form a coin that even helps purchase economic and social policy."--Jacket
