"Le Conservatoire, les élèves, leurs espoirs et désespoirs, leurs amours, leurs jalousies... avec comme professeur un Louis Jouvet magnifique, exaltant l'amour du théâtre ! Une peinture unique du milieu des jeunes comédiens transfigurée par les dialogues d'Henri Jeanson et le talent de ses interprètes. Un grand classique du cinéma français d'avant-guerre." Based on a notorious French court case know as the Gabrielle Russier case, this film centres on the consequences of a love affair between a schoolteacher in her thirties and her teenage student. The public scandal that ensues when the boy's parents bring charges against the teacher ruins the lives of both lovers. Ridiculed and harassed, the teacher is driven to suicide. Director Cayatte, who was a longtime opponent of the antiquated French legal system, portrays the lovers in a sympathetic light and their accusers as villainous upholders of bourgeois morality. The film's success bestowed fame upon Annie Girardot, who played the tragic teacher and went on to become one of the most popular female stars in France during the 1970s

"The Marshal summons the jury and an insight is given into the background of the seven jurors who are to decide on the guilt of the accused, a sick man's mistress on trail for his mercy killing. The trial appears to be not presented to prove her innocence or guilt, but rather to let the court (film) philosophize on the moral acceptability of euthanasia"--Internet movie database summary by Les Adams, as viewed October 13, 2005
