Christo and Jeanne-Claude : remembering the Running fence by Brian O'Doherty( Book )

7 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 270 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The dynamic partnership of Christo and Jeanne-Claude spans more than four decades, and their enormous outdoor art installations are known the world over ... from 1972 to 1976, Christo and Jeanne-Claude conceived, planned, and created the Running Fence, an eighteen-foot-high white nylon fence that stretched more than twenty-four miles across Marin and Sonoma counties in northern California. ... It was a landmark event in contemporary art. [book title] revisits the ephemeral splendor of this remarkable outdoor installation and celebrates the Smithsonian American Art Museum's recent acquisition of the complete documentation exhibition for Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin Counties, California, 1972-1976, an archive of more than 350 individual items, including fifty original preparatory works by Christo, a sixty-eight-foot-long scale model, more than 240 documentary photographs by Wolfgang Volz and Gianfranco Gorgoni, and fence materials from the original installation"--Inside cover

The mechanics of pile-soil interaction in cohesionless soils by David Michael Holloway( Book )

11 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Foundation conditions and structural constraints often require the use of pile foundations to support the structure and to minimize objectionable settlements. The accurate prediction of foundation performance and the effective interpretation of field load tests are urgent economic and technical needs of geotechnical engineering practice. This study represents the final phase of an investigation into the analysis of pile load tests. Overall study objectives have been: (a) to compile and make available to the Corps of Engineers (CE) offices the results of pile load tests performed by CE offices and other investigators; (b) to review analytical solutions for determining pile load capacity; (c) to compare pile load tests results with theoretical solutions; (d) to develop improved methods for conducting and interpreting pile load tests; and (e) to develop design guidelines

A study of the effects of differential loadings on cofferdams by James R Martin( Book )

2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recent studies have suggested that most existing design methods are excessively conservative. This investigation is directed toward providing a data base through the documentation and comparing five case histories where instrumentation was used to monitor the behavior. Primary consideration was given to the response of the cofferdams under differential loading. In the course of the investigation, the response of each cofferdam was documented and dissected in terms of the behavior at each stage of the differential loading. A strong correlation is found to exist between the lateral cell deflection and the level of differential loading, with the exact nature of the correlation depending on certain key parameters including cell foundation, cell fill material, cell width to height ratio, presence of a stabilizing berm, and nature of loading. It is found for conservatively designed cells that the response falls into a predictable pattern which can be characterized in terms of nondimensionalized parameters for both normal and more severe levels of loading. In addition to deformations, information is provided on interlock tensions where available. The results are believed to provide a baseline for cofferdam behavior that can be useful in gaging the expected behavior of other cofferdams and for verifying the accuracy of new forms of predictive tools such as the finite element method.
