The inflationary universe : the quest for a new theory of cosmic origins by Alan H Guth( Book )
23 editions published between 1997 and 2000 in English and held by 1,313 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The classic big bang theory is great at describing what happened after the bang. Yet until recently, particle physicists and cosmologists were stuck on many questions that the big bang theory couldn't answer, including: What made the big bang BANG in the first place? If matter can be neither created nor destroyed, how could so much matter arise from nothing at all? Why can we only see a minute part of the mega-universe? In 1979, a young particle physicist named Alan Guth answered these questions and made front-page news with one of the greatest discoveries in modern cosmology: cosmic inflation. This is the compelling, first-hand account of Guth's paradigm-breaking discovery of the origins of the universe; and it is a fascinating chronicle of his dramatic struggle to justify it. Guth's startling theory states that in the billion-trillion-trillionth of a second before the big bang, there was a period of hyper-rapid "inflation" that got the big bang started. Inflation modifies our picture of only the first small fraction of a second in the history of the universe, and then it joins onto the standard big bang theory, preserving all of the successes of the older theory. But because inflation explains the bang itself, it is a much richer theory than the older versions of the big bang

An Answer to everything ( Visual )
1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Program 6: We now know that the universe had a beginning and how all the matter formed but there is still one outstanding question: how did the Big Bang begin? Stephen Hawking is joined by other leading scientists as they try to answer this question. Includes discussions of inflation theory, quantum mechanics, and string theory
Between order and disorder ( Visual )
2 editions published between 1991 and 2004 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
John Bell, Alan Guth, Roger Penrose, et. al., define matter and its various states of order-disorder in crystals, superconductors, superfluids, plasma. Program continues with discussions of turbulence, chaos and orbital chaos, the double pendulum, and the second Copernican revolution
Matter and the universe ( Visual )
2 editions published between 1991 and 2004 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This program shows how radiotelescopes and observatories provide complementary images of celestial objects. Gives on-camera explanations by scientists of how we see immense objects at immense distances and some of the empirical bases for theories of the Big Bang and the origin of matter
The Oskar Klein memorial lectures by Gösta Ekspong( )
2 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The series of Oskar Klein Memorial Lectures is a must-read for those keenly involved or simply interested in exploring the many fascinating aspects of physics. This volume presents two landmark lectures given by Hans Bethe in October 1990 and Alan H. Guth in June 1991 under the series of Oskar Klein Memorial Lectures. Hans Bethe's lectures dealt with two themes: the astrophysical importance of neutrinos in supernova outbursts and a theoretical account of neutrinos through observations of the neutrino flux from the centre of the sun. Anyone interested in understanding the processes involved in the collapse and explosion of a large star would certainly find this book enlightening. Alan H. Guth's lecture dealt with the various aspects of the origin of the universe - a topic which never fails to intrigue. The originator of the inflation scenario for the Big Bang theory, Guth has included his latest observations on the COBE satellite and their theoretical interpretation in this lecture. Anyone wishing to grasp the essentials of these ideas, will find in Guth's lecture a wealth of knowledge. This volume also presents for the first time in English the original derivation of the Klein-Nishima formula for Compton scattering and an account of the "Klein Paradox". A special study reveals interesting facts on the callaboration between Oskar Klein and Yoshio Nishima in 1928 and further, surprising facts on the treatment by the Nobel Committee for Physics of the prize to A.H. Compton in 1927. Some translated autobiographic texts have also been included to acquaint the reader with Klein's interest in cosmology and his attempts to find the driving force behind the expanding system of galaxies, what Klein termed the meta-galaxy
