Exotic brew : the art of living in the age of enlightenment by Piero Camporesi( Book )

39 editions published between 1990 and 2008 in 6 languages and held by 511 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

He describes how the upper classes were anxious to leave behind the heritage of the 'dark' age, and to elaborate a nimbler, more refined life-style. With this new lifestyle came a lighter, more functional diet, free of the rich meats, strong spices, and pungent and unsociable aromas (cheese, onion, garlic) which characterized the old cuisine. The new cuisine that emerged was intended to be as pleasing to the eye as to the palate: it suited sensitive dispositions, the meagre appetites of noblewomen, and was perfectly in tune with the new preference for close-fitting clothes and slimness of figure. Camporesi places these changes in taste and cuisine in their socio-cultural context, including the increasing importance of French cultural models in the world of food and drink, and describes the growing interest taken in the world outside Europe, especially China and the Americas, where most of the exotic additions to the European diet originated

The anatomy of the senses : natural symbols in medieval and early modern Italy by Piero Camporesi( Book )

28 editions published between 1985 and 2005 in 4 languages and held by 471 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drawing on a large body of literature, Camporesi builds up a remarkable picture of the everyday beliefs and practices of medieval and early modern Italy. He examines the symbolism relating to food and the overtones of vampirism which have haunted the Christian sacraments. He discusses the eating habits of monks and hermits which were held up as a religious model for the community. He offers a striking analysis of medieval views of the body, and of humanity situated at the centre of the symbolic universe. Moving from the anatomical table to the kitchen table, he shows the similarities between the anatomist and the cook, both of whom worked with dead flesh, with corpses which had to be cut up, greased, severed, skinned, diced and gutted. Vivid in detail and engagingly written, The Anatomy of the Senses will be welcomed by students and researchers in social and cultural history, as well as anyone interested in the history of the body, food and popular beliefs
The land of hunger by Piero Camporesi( Book )

42 editions published between 1978 and 2009 in 4 languages and held by 432 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The magic harvest : food, folklore, and society by Piero Camporesi( Book )

9 editions published between 1993 and 1998 in English and held by 379 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Juice of life : the symbolic and magic significance of blood by Piero Camporesi( Book )

8 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 295 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, bodily fluids or "humors"--Whether blood, semen, or phlegm - obsessed the educated and ignorant alike. These "elixirs" were believed to possess magical powers guaranteeing long life, sexual potency, intellectual insight (particularly in women), and even holiness. Piero Camporesi, a specialist in popular culture from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, tells this fascinating story with an abundance of examples, still of great relevance to those of us who drink "cordials" for revitalizing the heart, take potions for sexual vigor, and believe that a ruddy complexion is a sign of health. This is also a proto-feminist story, for women's purified body, with its menstrual discharge, endows her with greater intelligence - a paradoxical but revolutionary conclusion in an era of misogyny

I balsami di Venere by Piero Camporesi( Book )

21 editions published between 1989 and 2007 in 4 languages and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Science in the kitchen and the art of eating well by Pellegrino Artusi( Book )

32 editions published between 1970 and 2011 in Italian and held by 88 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"First published in 1891, Pelegrino Artusi's La scienza in cucina e l'arte di mangiar bene has come to be recognized as the most significant Italian cookbook of modern times. It was reprinted thirteen times and had sold more than 52,000 copies in the years before Artusi's death in 1910, with the number of recipes growing from 475 to 790. And while this figure has not changed, the book has consistently remained in print." "Although Artusi was himself of the upper classes and it was doubtful he had ever touched a kitchen utensil of lit a fire under a pot, he wrote the book not for professional chefs, as was the nineteenth-century custom, but for middle-class family cooks: housewives and their domestic helpers. His tone is that of a friendly advisor - humorous and nonchalant. He indulges in witty anecdotes about many of the recipes, describing his experiences and the historical relevance of particular dishes." "This English edition features a delightful introduction by Luigi Ballerini that traces the fascinating history of the book and explains its importance in the context of Italian history and politics. The illustrations are by the noted Italian artist Giuliano Della Casa."--Jacket
