"En décembre 1916, Marcel Duchamp, devenu célèbre outre-Atlantique grâce à son Nu descendant un escalier exposé à l'Armory Show (1913), fait la rencontre de Henri-Pierre Roché, attaché à une mission diplomatique française aux États-Unis, collectionneur et homme de lettres, Don Juan très actif. La séduction est immédiate, réciproque. Marcel sera "Victor", et plus familièrement "Totor", pour Henri-Pierre qui est le premier des fidèles de Duchamp, et qui garde dès leur rencontre les Neuf Moules Mâlic, appelés entre eux Le Petit Verre, matrice de ta Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même, l'opus magnum de l'artiste. Après 1919, l'amitié se renforce à Paris, les Carnets de Roché, quelques billets, des affaires artistiques et commerciales (en particulier l'acquisition en commun des Brancusi de la collection Quinn, l'aventure des Rotoreliefs) en témoignent. Cette relation, fidèle, exemplaire, est transcrite dans une Correspondance que les circonstances de guerre après 1940, et le choix de Marcel Duchamp de vivre aux États-Unis, rendent abondante, précise, familière. L'attention extrême que Roché porte à l'oeuvre de Duchamp, et l'ironie affectueuse de ce dernier, constituent un témoignage très éclairant des relations de l'artiste à "ses choses", comme il appelle ses oeuvres, et de leur lente réception, aux États-Unis et en France, après 1945. Roché conserve à peu près toutes les lettres de son ami. Duchamp (et son épouse Teeny) seulement celles de Roché postérieures à 1953 date à laquelle celui-ci publie son roman Jules et Jim. Les échanges sont continus, vifs, drôles, affectueux. Ils préparent parfois des séjours de Duchamp à Paris. Ils constituent un témoignage précieux, unique, qui illustre et met en scène sans aucun fard la personnalité singulière de Marcel Duchamp, cela jusqu'à la disparition de Henri-Pierre Roché en 1959"--Page 4 of cover
