How the leopard changed its spots : the evolution of complexity by Brian C Goodwin ( Book )
30 editions published between 1994 and 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,077 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The "leopard" in the title of How the Leopard Changed Its Spots is the science of biology, today poised for a massive change in its theoretical perspective. Here Brian Goodwin, described by colleagues as "the poet of theoretical biology," proposes an alternative to the modern synthesis of Darwinism and twentieth-century genetics. Goodwin rigorously and clearly demonstrates the flaws in the quasi-religious fervor with which Darwin's theory of natural selection is defended, and presents another, equally powerful engine for the origin and diversity of species. The consequences of this altered perspective are both scientific and metaphorical. The images of Darwinism that color so much of modern life - survival of the fittest, selfish genes, survival strategies, "a war of all against all" - are incomplete, says Goodwin. If we regard organisms as more than survival machines, they take on an intrinsic value, with worth in and of themselves. Darwinism has shortchanged us, scientifically and ethically, for more than a century. This book demonstrates that organisms are every bit as cooperative as they are competitive, as altruistic as they are selfish, as creative and playful as they are destructive and repetitive. Erudite, dazzling, and elegantly written, at once a brilliant application of the laws of physics to the study of life, an exposition of the powerful force - not Darwinian selection - that shapes life on earth, and a meditation on the evolution of complex forms, it is certain to be the science book of the year
Signs of life : how complexity pervades biology by Ricard V Solé ( Book )
12 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 557 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
How do such simple creatures as ants and termites manage such complex behavior as building huge nests and moving in swarms? And why do certain ant nests show pulses of activity that are not apparent in any individual ant? Classical ecology tells us that if two strongly competitive species try to occupy a common resource or territory, "competitive exclusion" will drive one of them to extinction. But if this is so, why are natural ecosystems so diverse? And why did all the basic body plans of the animal kingdom appear in a single geological era, and no new ones since? Was this inevitable, or a grand accident?"
Temporal organization in cells; a dynamic theory of cellular control processes by Brian C Goodwin ( Book )
13 editions published between 1963 and 1998 in English and held by 540 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Analytical physiology of cells and developing organisms by Brian C Goodwin ( Book )
9 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 313 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Development and evolution by British Society for Developmental Biology ( Book )
7 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 301 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Form and transformation : generative and relational principles in biology by Gerry Webster ( Book )
7 editions published between 1996 and 2011 in English and held by 295 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A number of specific examples, including tetrapod limb formation and Drosophila development, are used to illustrate how these hierarchically organized dynamic fields undergo robust symmetry-breaking cascades to produce generic forms. These are the basic morphological structures available for evolutionary transformations, whose classification into equivalence classes provides a basis for taxonomic relationships. Evolutionary and developmental biologists, geneticists and philosophers of science will all find this a thought-provoking book

The Intuitive Way of Knowing A Tribute to Brian Goodwin by David Lambert ( Book )
2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Professor Brian Goodwin was a visionary biologist, mathematician and philosopher. Born in Canada in 1931, he studied biology at McGill University then for his PhD at Oxford under the eminent biologist Conrad Waddington. Understanding organisms as dynamic wholes, he worked to develop an alternate view to extreme Darwinism based solely on genetic factors. His evolutionary vision was centred more on archetypes than ancestors and cooperation rather than competition. As a scientist Brian's work was groundbreaking and highly influential. He was a pioneer in the field of theoretical biology, an
Las manchas del leopardo : la evolución de la complejidad by Brian C Goodwin ( Book )
4 editions published between 1997 and 2008 in Spanish and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Mechanical engineering of the cytoskeleton in developmental biology by Kwang W Jeon ( )
5 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Developing organisms are systems in which the geometry, dynamics, and boundary conditions are all changing in the course of morphogenesis. The morphogenesis of cells and organisms appear to be mediated in part by the mechanically active components of the cytoskeleton. Mechanical forces have long been considered secondary to the effects of molecular mechanisms in cell growth, differentiation, and development. This volume explores the role of mechanical forces in cell growth and development and demonstrates its importance. This volume will prove invaluable to all biologists interested in the fundamentals of mechanical forces in development, from the advanced to the graduate researcher
