Ravels Klaviermusik, oftmals geprägt von horrenden technischen Schwierigkeiten, weist eine Klangpalette aus, die schier grenzenlos scheint. Im Zyklus Gaspard de la nuit, 1908 auf 3 Gedichte komponiert, bringt Ravel beispielsweise einen erfolglosen Verführungsversuch einer Nymphe (Ondine) zum Klingen oder aber, wie in "Le Gibet" (Der Galgen), eine Horrorvision. "Scarbo" ist mit bis dahin nie dagewesenen technischen Schwierigkeiten gespickt. Der Zyklus Miroirs (Spiegelungen), 3 Jahre früher entstanden und technisch nicht weniger anspruchsvoll, gehört ebenso zu seinen bekanntesten Klavierwerken wie Jeux d'eau (Wasserspiele), das seit seiner erfolgreichen Uraufführung 1902 mit seinen reichen, durchsichtigen Harmonien und Klangfarben fasziniert. - Dem amerikanischen Pianisten Tzimon Barto (im Aprilheft von FonoForum mit einem umfangreichen Interview gewürdigt) gelingt es, Ravels Musik mit ihrer außergewöhnlichen Beherrschung des Rhythmus', ihren subtilen Harmonien und Klangfarben mit seinem makellosen Anschlag und seiner virtuosen Technik perfekt darzustellen
