M. Valerii Martialis Epigrammata by Martial( Book )

1,136 editions published between 1470 and 2015 in 13 languages and held by 3,445 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In his epigrams, Martial (c. 40-c. 103 CE) is a keen, sharp-tongued observer of Roman scenes and events, including the new Colosseum, country life, a debauchee's banquet, and the eruption of Vesuvius. His poems are sometimes obscene, in the tradition of the genre, sometimes affectionate or amusing, and always pointed

Despite his enduring popularity, Martial has recently suffered from serious critical neglect. The present work is the first edition of selections from Martial to be published for decades, and the first ever to include a fully representative selection of the oeuvre of the poet, who has often been criticised, unfairly, the authors argue, for obscenity and flattery of the Emperor Domitian. The epigrams included in the selection are organised under various heads, e.g. Martial and poetry, sexual mores, satirical pieces. A very full introduction deals with such topics as the prejudices and predilections of his audience which conditioned Martial's choice of subject matter, Martial's language, the structure and style of the epigrams, the epigrammatic tradition and Martial's creative engagement with it. The detailed commentary is suitable for use with undergraduates and is distinguished by its focus on social history as well as literary interpretation

M. Valerii Martialis Liber spectaculorum by Martial( Book )

13 editions published in 2006 in English and Latin and held by 303 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the first full-scale edition of the surviving epigrams from the so-called Liber spectaculorum by Martial, a thematically unified collection celebrating highlights from games held under imperial sponsorship in Flavian Rome. The poems have been preserved in various combinations in six medieval florilegia, and are augmented by two from the Florilegium Gallicum that were first attributed to the collection in the sixteenth century." "Each epigram is accompanied by an apparatus criticus, an English translation, an introduction, and a detailed commentary discussing matters of linguistic, literary, and historical interest. To elucidate these allusive poems, a wide range of evidence is adduced from epigraphy and art as well as works of literature."--Jacket
Epigrams by Martial( Book )

13 editions published between 2003 and 2010 in English and Latin and held by 296 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This new commentary illuminates the allusions to people, places, things, and cultural practices of late first-century Rome that pervade Martial's poetry. It analyzes the epigrammatist's poems as literary creations, treating such topics as the structure of the individual poems and of the book as a whole, and the influence of earlier texts on Martial's language and themes. This edition thus fills an important gap and will be of interest to readers of both Martial and ancient epigram, from advanced undergraduates to scholars."--Jacket

Book XIII : the Xenia by Martial( Book )

8 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and Latin and held by 216 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although both innovative and engaging, Book XIII of Martial's epigrams, the Xenia, has generally been neglected. As its name suggests, it is concerned with presents, in particular those given at the Saturnalia by hosts to their dinner guests. Like the Apophoreta, which Martial published next, it comprises independent poetic couplets cast as descriptive gift-tags. Far from being mere verse catalogues, however, these books are highly sophisticated literary compositions. Whereas the Apophoreta encompass many different items, the Xenia are devoted to food and drink, and are carefully ordered to reflect the courses of the cena at which they might have been distributed." "This edition contains the first commentary devoted exclusively to the Xenia. It combines literary and textual comment with close attention to the social and cultural context, and will therefore be of value not only to specialists in Latin literature but also to anyone interested in the food and festivals of Ancient Rome."--BOOK JACKET
Epigramme : Lateinisch-Deutsch by Martial( Book )

17 editions published between 1999 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It was to celebrate the opening of the Roman Colosseum in A.D. 80 that Martial published his first book of poems, "On the Spectacles." Written with satiric wit and a talent for the memorable phrase, the poems in this collection record the broad spectacle of shows in the new arena. The great Latin epigrammist's twelve subsequent books capture the spirit of Roman life - both public and private - in vivid detail. Fortune hunters and busybodies, orators and lawyers, schoolmasters and street hawkers, jugglers and acrobats, doctors and plagiarists, beautiful slaves, and generous hosts are among the diverse characters who populate his verses. Martial is a keen and sharp-tongued observer of Roman Society. His pen brings into crisp relief a wide variety of scenes and events: the theater and public games, life in the countryside, a rich debauchee's banquet, lions in the amphitheater, the eruption of Vesuvius. The epigrams are sometimes obscene, in the tradition of the genre, sometimes warmly affectionate or amusing, and always pointed. Like his contemporary Statius, though, Martial shamelessly flatters his patron Domitian, one of Rome's worst-reputed emperors. D.R. Shackleton Bailey now gives us in three volumes, a reliable modern translation of Martial's often difficult Latin, eliminating many misunderstandings in previous versions. The text is mainly that of his highly praised Teubner edition of 1990
