Martial, the father of the epigram, was one of the brilliant provincial poets who made their literary mark on first-century Rome. His Epigrams can be affectionate or cruel, elegiac or playful; they target every element of Roman society, from slaves to schoolmasters to, above all, the aristocratic elite. With wit and wisdom, Martial evokes not "the grandeur that was Rome," but rather the timeless themes of urban life and society. From the Trade Paperback edition

M. Valerii Martialis Liber spectaculorum by Martial( Book )

70 editions published between 1620 and 2006 in 6 languages and held by 591 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the first full-scale edition of the surviving epigrams from the so-called Liber spectaculorum by Martial, a thematically unified collection celebrating highlights from games held under imperial sponsorship in Flavian Rome. The poems have been preserved in various combinations in six medieval florilegia, and are augmented by two from the Florilegium Gallicum that were first attributed to the collection in the sixteenth century." "Each epigram is accompanied by an apparatus criticus, an English translation, an introduction, and a detailed commentary discussing matters of linguistic, literary, and historical interest. To elucidate these allusive poems, a wide range of evidence is adduced from epigraphy and art as well as works of literature."--BOOK JACKET

Epigrammi by Martial( Book )

125 editions published between 1827 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 334 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Select epigrams by Martial( Book )

16 editions published between 1755 and 2003 in English and Latin and held by 317 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Despite his enduring popularity, Martial has recently suffered from serious critical neglect. The present work is the first edition of selections from Martial to be published for decades, and the first ever to include a fully representative selection of the oeuvre of the poet, who has often been criticised, unfairly, the authors argue, for obscenity and flattery of the Emperor Domitian. The epigrams included in the selection are organised under various heads, e.g. Martial and poetry, sexual mores, satirical pieces. A very full introduction deals with such topics as the prejudices and predilections of his audience which conditioned Martial's choice of subject matter, Martial's language, the structure and style of the epigrams, the epigrammatic tradition and Martial's creative engagement with it. The detailed commentary is suitable for use with undergraduates and is distinguished by its focus on social history as well as literary interpretation
