Three dimensional free-surface effects on hydrofoils by J. R. J Richardson( Book )

1 edition published in 1965 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report presents the first stage in the development of a three-dimensional theory for thin hydrofoils. The manner in which a foil can be built-up of doublets (representing thickness) and horseshoe vortices (representing lift) is described. The first step must therefore be to find the effect of the free-surface on the flow caused by doublets and vortices. The problem was not approached directly due to difficulties with the boundary conditions for moving disturbances. Instead, an analysis was made of a stationary source with oscillating strength. The results for pulse and step sources are then obtained from the oscillating case by Fourier transforms. Finally the pulse and step sources are integrated along the path of motion to obtain the required moving disturbances. The boundary conditions at great distances from the disturbance are automatically satisfied when this process is used. Equations are presented for the effect of the free-surface (at any Froude number) on the supervelocities caused by a moving doublet and horseshoe vortices oriented in vertical and lateral planes. The form of these equations was arranged so that computation is as easy as possible. (Author)

Information Presentations for Distributed Decision Making: Observations at the Naval War College by David Noble( Book )

1 edition published in 1988 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This report describes research at the Naval War College in which a psychology theory was applied to information presentations potentially able to support distributed decision making in the Naval Battle Group. The psychology theory describes how information used by experienced decision makers is encoded in memory and used for situation interpretation, decision making, and problem solving. The information presentations represent plans. They are intended to support distributed decision making by helping all decision makers have a better and more uniform understanding of the plan, by helping them be alert to critical tactical conditions that bear on the continued viability of the plan, and by reminding them of the different responsibilities and tasks of all Battle Group decision makers. apply information presentation principles developed from the psychology theory to charts representing war games plans at the Naval War College. These charts proved easy to understand and useful of eliciting plan information, In addition, the charts were sufficiently flexible to be updated as the plan was executed, and consequently could be used to represent the progress of the plan in meeting mission objectives. The war game participants generally commented favorably on the chart, suggesting that such presentations, if integrated into the Battle Group tactical information system, might contribute to military effectiveness by aiding planning and plan supervision. Contrary to expectation, no example of poor coordination caused by differing situation assessments among decision makers was observed in the monitored war games. (FR)

Pressure Distribution on a Hydrofoil with Pod and Strut Near the Free Surface by J. R. J Richardson( Book )

1 edition published in 1968 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A method is given for calculating the pressure distribution on a hydrofoil with pod and strut. The foil planform can be arbitrary in shape, but must be essentially contained in a horizontal plane so that all points are at the same depth; the strut is assumed to be a constant symmetric section without taper or sweep; the pod is assumed to be a circular section with its center line at the junction of the foil and strut. The technique is an extension of that developed for a foil alone (ERA 53 - 3). The combined foil-strut-pod system is represented by a source and vortex sheet distribution over the plane of the hydrofoil - a source sheet in the plane of the symmetric strut extending from the pod center line to the free surface - a source and vortex line along the pod center line. A program to calculate the lift and pressure distribution has been written for the IBM 3-60/65 (ERA 53-6). Sample calculations have been given for two configurations. (Author)

A study of the flow through a vertical axis propeller by J. A McKillop( Book )

1 edition published in 1965 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The application of a three dimensional flow visualisation technique to the study of the flow pattern of a vertical axis propeller is described. Photographs of the streamlines encountered by a blade throughout a complete orbital cycle are shown and analysed to yield the inflow vector. The results are compared with blade normal force time histories obtained by strain gage readings from one blade root. The computed thrust is finally compared with existing performance data. (Author)

A Flow Visualization Study of a High Pitch Cycloidal Propeller by Alfred L Jobst( Book )

1 edition published in 1972 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

An experimental test program designed to study the flow through a cycloidal propeller (P/D = pi/.70) was conducted in the water tunnel at the National Research Laboratories in Ottawa. Visualization of the flow was achieved by injecting reflecting particles that followed the streamlines and by illuminating sections of the flow with a plane light source. Records were made using both still and movie cameras. The tunnel speed was varied to permit views of the working model to be taken at several advance ratios. For purposes of detailed analysis, the actual angle of attack and resultant velocity vectors were calculated from the inflow parameters obtained from still pictures. The loads normal to the blade were measured and compared to loads obtained by calculation. (Author)
