Hon är över huvud taget inte särskilt intresserad av sitt eget jag kan man tycka, utan återberättar lika gärna någon av alla de sällsamma historier som hon fått höra som barn och som ofta går igen i hennes romaner. Herrgården Mårbacka ägdes av Selma Lagerlöfs släkt under flera generationer, men i mitten av 1880-talet blev man tvungen att sälja av ekonomiska skäl. Tack vare sina framgångar lyckades Selma Lagerlöf köpa tillbaka gården, som idag är ett välkänt museum för många av hennes läsare i världen.
