17 editions published in 1987 in English and Undetermined and held by 90 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The collection of papers published in this book was initially presented at the Workshop on Software Factories and Ada, held on Capri, May 26-30, 1986. The subject of the book is software development environments. Software development is treated from three viewpoints: methodologies, language issues and mechanisms. Of particular interest are the discussions of automation of the development process and the formalization of software development specifications. Several new methodologies are described, many of which are available on the commercial market. New is in particular the formalization of the design and development process. Interesting ideas are presented on planning the design process and on supporting project management by formal tools. The reader will find a variety of interesting methodologies and mechanisms that are operational. The book is suitable for readers interested in knowing in which direction programming environment research is moving

Modularization and hierarchy in a family of operating systems ( Book )
1 edition published in 1978 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The objective of the Family of Operating Systems project has been to investigate the feasibility of constructing systems which use identical or similar resources and share basic design decisions. The concepts of module, address space and hierarchy have been used with special care. Common to all family members is the virtual memory facility which controls dynamic address space transitions. Family members may differ in the facilities they provide in static address spaces. This report presents an overall description of the FAMOS system. Section 1 describes the basic ideas underlying the FAMSO system and Section 2 describes the implementation. A more detailed description is found in the official documentation of the FAMOS system. This documentation consists of a number of module documents. Each module document comprises two parts, an introductory description which specifies the function and dependency of a module and a type description which defines the representation and implementation of a module as static address space. On a solution and a generalization of the cigarette smokers' problem by A. Nico Habermann ( Book )
1 edition published in 1972 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The author of the Cigarette Smokers' Problem (S. Patil, MIT) tried to show that the problem could not be solved using Dijkstra's P- and V-operations without conditional statements. D.L. Parnas (CMU) showed that Patil's proof was false by presenting a solution using P- and V-operations, but no conditional statements. The paper presents first a correctness proof of Parnas' solution. This solution leads to an obvious generalization and in connection with it the question of an optimal set of distinguishable codewords is addressed. Finally a more natural approach to the problem is discussed and a solution for this variation is presented with its correctness proof. (Author)
