System development and Ada by A. Nico Habermann( Book )

27 editions published in 1987 in English and Undetermined and held by 338 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Annotation The collection of papers published in this book was initially presented at the Workshop on Software Factories and Ada, held on Capri, May 26-30, 1986. The subject of the book is software development environments. Software development is treated from three viewpoints: methodologies, language issues and mechanisms. Of particular interest are the discussions of automation of the development process and the formalization of software development specifications. Several new methodologies are described, many of which are available on the commercial market. New is in particular the formalization of the design and development process. Interesting ideas are presented on planning the design process and on supporting project management by formal tools. The reader will find a variety of interesting methodologies and mechanisms that are operational. The book is suitable for readers interested in knowing in which direction programming environment research is moving

The correctness proof of a quadratic-hash algorithm by A. Nico Habermann( Book )

3 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The statements of a program do not always provide sufficient information for proving its correctness. The correctness of the algorithm implemented by the program must often be proved with the pure mathematical techniques or exhaustive enumeration. An example program is presented for which the correctness proof of the program is trivial provided that the correctness of the underlying algorithm can be demonstrated. The program can be viewed as an abstraction of a quadratic hash algorithm. It is used at the end of the paper to encode the algorithm most efficiently. (Author)
Modularization and hierarchy in a family of operating systems by A. Nico Habermann( Book )

4 editions published in 1978 in English and Undetermined and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The objective of the Family of Operating Systems project has been to investigate the feasibility of constructing systems which use identical or similar resources and share basic design decisions. The concepts of module, address space and hierarchy have been used with special care. Common to all family members is the virtual memory facility which controls dynamic address space transitions. Family members may differ in the facilities they provide in static address spaces. This report presents an overall description of the FAMOS system. Section 1 describes the basic ideas underlying the FAMSO system and Section 2 describes the implementation. A more detailed description is found in the official documentation of the FAMOS system. This documentation consists of a number of module documents. Each module document comprises two parts, an introductory description which specifies the function and dependency of a module and a type description which defines the representation and implementation of a module as static address space. Path expressions by A. Nico Habermann( Book )

4 editions published in 1975 in English and Undetermined and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Traditionally, synchronization of concurrent processes is coded in line by operations on semaphores or similar objects. Path expressions move the responsibility of implementing such restrictions from the programmer to a compiler. The programmer specifies as part of a type definition which execution sequences are permitted. The advantage of using path experssions instead of P, V operations on semaphores (or similar operations) is comparable to the advantage of using for- and while-statements instead of JUMP or BRANCH instructions. In this paper the rules for writing a path expression are described, parsing and implementation are discussed and the use of path expressions is shown by a number of examples

Parallel neighbor-sort, or, The glory of the induction principle by A. Nico Habermann( Book )

3 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Array A(1:N) (N> or = 2) is to be sorted in ascending order using procedure NS(i) which arranges the values of an adjacent pair A(i), A(i+1) in the right order. It is shown that a parallel process P which can perform at least N divided by 2 executions of procedure NS in parallel will sort array A in p steps where p <or = N. The proof is based on the observation that the distance of the position of a number in array A after p steps and its final position is bounded by N - p. (Author)
Bliss reference manual: a basic language for implementation of system software for the pdp-10 by Carnegie-Mellon University( Book )

2 editions published between 1970 and 1971 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The document describes the BLISS implementation language as written for the PDP-10. BLISS is a language specifically designed for use as a tool in implementing large software programs. Special attention is given in the language design to the requirements of the systems programming task, such as: space and time efficiency, the representation of data structures, the lack of run-time support facilities, flexible control structures, modularization, and parameterization of programs
