The Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn concertos both have played a significant role in Ray Chen's career. His superb performance of the works led to his triumph at two major violin competitions: the 2008 Yehudi Menuhin Competition and first prize in the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels a year later. Chen brings a fresh interpretation to the cornerstones of violin repertoire and finds a kindred spirit in conductor Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra

Symphony no. 10 by Dmitriĭ Dmitrievich Shostakovich( )

10 editions published between 1978 and 2005 in 3 languages and held by 234 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Shostakovich's monumental Symphony No. 10 ranks among his finest works. From the bleak introspection of the extended opening movement, through the graphic evocation of violence in the explosive Allegro, and the eerie dance-like Allegretto alternating between dark and light, to the final movement's dramatic climax, this is a work of breathtaking musical contrasts. In 2010 Vasily Petrenko was named Male Artist of the Year at the Classical Brit Awards"--Booklet

Symphony no. 8 by Dmitriĭ Dmitrievich Shostakovich( )

8 editions published between 1992 and 2005 in No Linguistic content and Undetermined and held by 231 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Shostakovich's grim Eighth Symphony was written in 1943 and premiered by its dedicatee, Evgeny Mravinsky, whose recordings of the work still stand supreme. Now, Mariss Jansons, who as a young conductor was mentored by Mravinsky, leads his Pittsburgh players in a stellar concert performance recorded live. Orchestral execution is first-rate, and Jansons doesn't smooth over or prettify the hourlong work, soaked in the composer's bitterness about the Nazi and Stalinist brutality that stamped his life with fear and loathing. The long opening Adagio, with its brooding strings and pitiless brass eruptions, is shattering, as are the following grotesque Allegretto and the relentlessly powerful third movement. The final two movements maintain the bleak mood, though the finale tries to recover a measure of joy amid the gloom. Jansons and his orchestra sustain this potent work's intensity throughout, confirming the Eighth as one of the composer's most important and fully realized works. The filler is an interesting rehearsal excerpt
