When a wealthy old bachelor decides to take a pretty young wife, he is--this being opera--in for trouble. Especially when that wife is the enchanting Reri Grist. Act three: In the third act, poor Pasquale's house is a bedlam of new servants, all waiting on Norina, while the Don sadly examines a mountain of bills. The bride is going to the theater, it seems, on the first afternoon of their marriage -- and alone! He forbids her to go. She meets his objections by slapping his face, and then leaves the house, carefully dropping a paper as she goes out the door. Pasquale picks it up and finds that it is a letter from a lover, confirming a tryst with Sophronia for that evening. In his despair the Don summons Malatesta and disappears into his bedroom. The doctor and Ernesto make their last arrangements for the denouement, and when Ernesto goes into the garden, Malatesta is joined by his patient. As he listens to the shocking story of Sophronia's behavior, the doctor reluctantly agrees that if they discover the charges are true, he will take his erring sister away. The last scene takes place in the garden. Ernesto sings the serenade which is to be the signal, and Norina steals cautiously forward to open the gate. During the love duet which follows, Pasquale and Malatesta are seen creeping about with dim lanterns. Ernesto slips into the house. Pasquale confronts Norina, who denies that there was anyone with her. Pasquale orders her out of his house. She refuses to budge until Malatesta, in his prearranged role as peacemaker, warns her that Ernesto is bringing home his bride, Norina, on the morrow and that she, Sophronia, should not accept such an indignity. She agrees to go, but only when she has proof that the despised Norina is actually Ernesto's wife. Don Pasquale gladly summons Ernesto, promises a lavish settlement, and orders his nephew to go for Norina so that the marriage may take place at once. When the conspirators explain that Norina and Sophronia are one and the same, and that Pasquale's marriage was a hoax, the Don is too relieved to be angry, and happily gives his blessing to the young lovers. - Flyleaf
