Barbara Hepworth : a retrospective by Penelope Curtis( Book )

19 editions published in 1994 in English and Dutch and held by 640 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Barbara Hepworth's career spanned five decades, from 1925 to 1975. Her style moved from figuration, through geometric and organic abstraction, to the internationally acclaimed grandeur of her large-scale, post-war work. Her best known sculpture is associated with the landscape around St. Ives in Cornwall: 'I used colour and strings in many of the carvings ... The colour plunged me into the depths of water, caves or shadows deeper than the carved concavities themselves. The strings were the tension I felt between myself and the sea, the wind or the hills.'. This publication focuses on Hepworth's unique carvings. It reassesses her reputation in the light of attention recently paid to her contemporaries, Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore and offers the opportunity to look afresh at a major British artist

Henry Moore-- writings and conversations by Henry Moore( Book )

9 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 448 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Henry Moore's writings constitute a vivid and comprehensive record of his life and work, of the influences that shaped his vision, and of his reactions to the work of other artists, periods and cultures. Spanning some seventy years, Moore's writings and conversations are much more than documentary records of his life and times: they have considerable literary merit in their own right." "This fascinating collection of Moore's written and spoken words is the most comprehensive to be compiled and contains much previously unpublished material. It includes over 150 illustrations: photographs of the sculptures, drawings and prints discussed in the text, illustrations of works by other artists, and photographs of the sculptor and his environment at various stages of his life." "Henry Moore Writings and Conversations completes and complements the catalogues of Moore's sculpture, drawings and prints. It will be indispensable for scholars and engrossing reading for Moore enthusiasts worldwide."--Jacket
