Symmetry in chaos : a search for pattern in mathematics, art and nature by Mike Field( Book )

43 editions published between 1992 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 1,425 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Symmetry suggests order and regularity whilst chaos suggests disorder and randomness. 'Symmetry in Chaos' is an exploration of how combining seemingly contradictory principles can lead to the construction of striking and beautiful images. This book is an engaging look at the interplay of art and mathematics
Fearful symmetry : is God a geometer? by Ian M. T Stewart( Book )

20 editions published between 1992 and 2011 in 4 languages and held by 866 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the shapes of clouds to dewdrops on a spider's web, this accessible book employs the mathematical concepts of symmetry to portray fascinating facets of the physical and biological world. More than 120 figures illustrate the interaction of symmetry with dynamics and the mathematical unity of nature's patterns"--

The symmetry perspective : from equilibrium to chaos in phase space and physical space by Martin Golubitsky( Book )

20 editions published between 2001 and 2004 in English and held by 358 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pattern formation in physical systems is one of the major research frontiers of mathematics. A central theme of this book is that many instances of pattern formation can be understood within a single framework: symmetry. The book applies symmetry methods to increasingly complex kinds of dynamic behavior: equilibria, period-doubling, time-periodic states, homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits, and chaos. Examples are drawn from both ODEs and PDEs. In each case the type of dynamical behavior being studied is motivated through applications, drawn from a wide variety of scientific disciplines ranging from theoretical physics to evolutionary biology. An extensive bibliography is provided
Multiparameter bifurcation theory : proceedings of the AMS-IMS-SIAM joint summer research conference held July 14-20, 1985, with support from the National Science Foundation by AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference in the Mathematical Sciences on Multiparameter Bifurcation Theory( Book )

Pattern formation in continuous and coupled systems : a survey volume by Martin Golubitsky( Book )

7 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume contains a number of mini-review articles authored by speakers and attendees at the IMA workshop on pattern formation in continuous and coupled systems. Pattern formation has been studied intensively for most of this century by both experimentalists and theoreticians. This workshop focused on new directions in the patterns literature. Systems that generate new types of pattern such as discrete coupled systems, systems with global coupling, and combustion experiments were stressed, as were new types of pattern."--Jacket

Introduction to partial differential equations : a computational approach by Aslak Tveito( )

6 editions published between 1998 and 2005 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mathematics is playing an ever more important role in the physical and biological sciences, provoking a blurring of boundaries between scientific disciplines and a resurgence of interest in the modern as well as the cl- sical techniques of applied mathematics. This renewal of interest, both in research and teaching, has led to the establishment of the series: Texts in Applied Mathematics (TAM). The development of new courses is a natural consequence of a high level of excitement on the research frontier as newer techniques, such as numerical and symbolic computer systems, dynamical systems, and chaos mix with and reinforce the traditional methods of applied mathematics. Thus, the purpose of this textbook series is to meet the current and future needs of these advances and encourage the teaching of new courses. TAM will publish textbooks suitable for use in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses, and will complement the Applied Ma- ematical Sciences (AMS) series, which will focus on advanced textbooks and research-level monographs. Preface "It is impossible to exaggerate the extent to which modern applied mathematics has been shaped and fueled by the g- eral availability of fast computers with large memories. Their impact on mathematics, both applied and pure, is comparable to the role of the telescopes in astronomy and microscopes in biology." - Peter Lax, Siam Rev. Vol. 31 No. 4 Congratulations! You have chosen to study partial differential equations

Singularities and Groups in Bifurcation Theory Volume II by Martin Golubitsky( )

2 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bifurcation theory studies how the structure of solutions to equations changes as parameters are varied. The nature of these changes depends both on the number of parameters and on the symmetries of the equations. Volume I discusses how singularity-theoretic techniques aid the understanding of transitions in multiparameter systems. This volume focuses on bifurcation problems with symmetry and shows how group-theoretic techniques aid the understanding of transitions in symmetric systems. Four broad topics are covered: group theory and steady-state bifurcation, equicariant singularity theory, Hopf bifurcation with symmetry, and mode interactions. The opening chapter provides an introduction to these subjects and motivates the study of systems with symmetry. Detailed case studies illustrate how group-theoretic methods can be used to analyze specific problems arising in applications
