Symmetry in chaos : a search for pattern in mathematics, art and nature by Mike Field ( Book )
36 editions published between 1992 and 2009 in English and held by 1,379 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Symmetry suggests order and regularity whilst chaos suggests disorder and randomness. 'Symmetry in Chaos' is an exploration of how combining seemingly contradictory principles can lead to the construction of striking and beautiful images. This book is an engaging look at the interplay of art and mathematics
Fearful symmetry : is God a geometer? by Ian Stewart ( Book )
18 editions published between 1992 and 2011 in 5 languages and held by 908 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"From the shapes of clouds to dewdrops on a spider's web, this accessible book employs the mathematical concepts of symmetry to portray fascinating facets of the physical and biological world. More than 120 figures illustrate the interaction of symmetry with dynamics and the mathematical unity of nature's patterns"--

The symmetry perspective : from equilibrium to chaos in phase space and physical space by Martin Golubitsky ( Book )
19 editions published between 2001 and 2004 in English and held by 372 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Pattern formation in physical systems is one of the major research frontiers of mathematics. A central theme of this book is that many instances of pattern formation can be understood within a single framework: symmetry. The book applies symmetry methods to increasingly complex kinds of dynamic behavior: equilibria, period-doubling, time-periodic states, homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits, and chaos. Examples are drawn from both ODEs and PDEs. In each case the type of dynamical behavior being studied is motivated through applications, drawn from a wide variety of scientific disciplines ranging from theoretical physics to evolutionary biology. An extensive bibliography is provided
Multiparameter bifurcation theory : proceedings of the AMS-IMS-SIAM joint summer research conference held July 14-20, 1985, with support from the National Science Foundation by AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference ( Book )
10 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 276 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Bifurcation and symmetry : cross influence between mathematics and applications by E. L Allgower ( Book )
4 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and held by 173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Pattern formation in continuous and coupled systems : a survey volume by Martin Golubitsky ( Book )
7 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This volume contains a number of mini-review articles authored by speakers and attendees at the IMA workshop on pattern formation in continuous and coupled systems. Pattern formation has been studied intensively for most of this century by both experimentalists and theoreticians. This workshop focused on new directions in the patterns literature. Systems that generate new types of pattern such as discrete coupled systems, systems with global coupling, and combustion experiments were stressed, as were new types of pattern."--BOOK JACKET
Linear algebra and differential equations using MATLAB by Martin Golubitsky ( Book )
12 editions published between 1998 and 2001 in English and Spanish and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Singularities and groups in bifurcation theory by Martin Golubitsky ( Book )
9 editions published between 1988 and 2000 in English and held by 94 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
La symétrie du chaos : A la recherche des liens entre mathématiques, art et nature by Mike Field ( Book )
5 editions published in 1993 in French and held by 81 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Singularities and groups in bifurcation theory by Martin Golubitsky ( Book )
8 editions published in 1985 in English and German and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Chaotische Symmetrien : die Suche nach Mustern in Mathematik, Kunst und Natur by Mike Field ( Book )
1 edition published in 1993 in German and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Introduction to partial differential equations a computational approach by Aslak Tveito ( )
5 editions published between 1998 and 2005 in English and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book teaches the basic methods of partial differential equations and introduces related important ideas associated with the analysis of numerical methods for those partial differential equations. Standard topics such as separation of variables, Fourier analysis, maximum principles and energy estimates are included. Numerical methods are introduced in parallel to the classical theory. The numerical experiments are used to illustrate properties of differential equations and theory for finite difference approximations is developed." "The text would be suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics and engineering. Necessary prerequisites for this text are basic calculus and linear algebra. Some elementary knowledge of ordinary differential equations is also preferable."--Jacket

Singularities and Groups in Bifurcation Theory Volume II by Martin Golubitsky ( )
1 edition published in 1988 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Bifurcation theory studies how the structure of solutions to equations changes as parameters are varied. The nature of these changes depends both on the number of parameters and on the symmetries of the equations. Volume I discusses how singularity-theoretic techniques aid the understanding of transitions in multiparameter systems. This volume focuses on bifurcation problems with symmetry and shows how group-theoretic techniques aid the understanding of transitions in symmetric systems. Four broad topics are covered: group theory and steady-state bifurcation, equicariant singularity theory, Hopf bifurcation with symmetry, and mode interactions. The opening chapter provides an introduction to these subjects and motivates the study of systems with symmetry. Detailed case studies illustrate how group-theoretic methods can be used to analyze specific problems arising in applications
