Of interest are mentions of the War of 1812 and the evacuation of slaves at the approach of British warships, a letter from John Tyler on Andrew Jackson's fiscal policies, and comments on the Whig Party and the Virginia Reform Convention of 1851. One Civil War letter mentions the death of an acquaintance and two affadavits, 1863, concern slaves who fled to Union forces. Interspersed in the large segment of R.W. Carter II's estate settlement papers are several comments on reconstruction in Virginia
