Leon Cooper's somewhat peripatetic career has resulted in work in quantum field theory, superconductivity, the quantum theory of measurement as well as the mechanisms that underly learning and memory. He has written numerous essays on a variety of subjects as well as a highly regarded introduction to the ideas and methods of physics for non-physicists. Among the many accolades, he has received (some deserved) one he likes specially is the comment of an anonymous reviewer who characterized him as "a nonsense physicist". A theoretical model of synaptic plasticity is used to examine the importance of the correlation of left eye and right eye afferent activities for the development of binocular receptive field properties in visual cortex. Generally, cortical cells that receive less binocularly correlated activity become less binocular. We argue that larger disparity decreases correlation and larger receptive field size increases correlation. Therefore, the consequences of normal uncorrelated activity are: first, disparity selective neurons that are optimally stimulated at the horopter tend to be more binocular than cells selective for nonzero disparities. Second, cortical cells with large receptive fields tend to be more binocular and can maintain larger disparities than small-field cells. Third, low levels of uncorrelated activity allow changes in ocular dominance that accentuate any ocular dominance organization present prior to visual experience. The model also readily accounts for the loss of binocularity caused by monocular deprivation, alternating occlusion, and strabismus

Two independent methods are described for calculating the multiple scattering distribution for projected angle scattering resulting when very high energy charged particles traverse a thick scatterer. The single scattering law for projected angle scattering is taken to be the Rutherford scattering law for projected angle scattering modified at small angles by electron shielding and at large angles by a nuclear form factor F[sub n]([phi]/[phi][sub o]) which gives the effect of the finite nuclear size. The calculations can be carried through for any reasonable choice of F[sub n] and have been carried through for two suggested choices of F[sub n] for the examples of fast [mu]-meson scattering in 2 cm and 5 cm thick lead slabs, with good agreement for the two methods of calculation. The results are compared with the theories of Moliere and Olbert
