BCS : 50 years by Leon N Cooper( Book )

24 editions published between 2007 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 229 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The BCS theory of superconductivity developed in 1957 by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer has been remarkably successful in explaining the properties of superconductors. In addition, concepts from BCS have been incorporated into diverse fields of physics, from nuclear physics and dense quark matter to the current standard model. Practical applications include SQUIDs, magnetic resonance imaging, superconducting electronics and the transmission of electricity. This invaluable book is a compilation of both a historical account and a discussion of the current state of theory and experiment. With contributions from many prominent scientists, it aims to introduce students and researchers to the origins, the impact and the current state of the BCS theory."--Publisher's description
Science and human experience : values, culture and the mind by Leon N Cooper( Book )

12 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 219 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Does science have limits? Where does order come from? Can we understand consciousness? Written by Nobel Laureate Leon N. Cooper, this book places pressing scientific questions in the broader context of how they relate to human experience. Widely considered to be a highly original thinker, Cooper has written and given talks on a large variety of subjects, ranging from the relationship between art and science, possible limits of science, to the relevance of the Turing Test. These essays and talks have been brought together for the first time in this fascinating book, giving readers an opportunity to experience Cooper's unique perspective on a range of subjects. Tackling a diverse spectrum of topics, from the conflict of faith and science to whether understanding neural networks could lead to machines that think like humans, this book will captivate anyone interested in the interaction of science with society."
How we learn, how we remember : toward an understanding of brain and neural systems : selected papers of Leon N. Cooper by Leon N Cooper( Book )

10 editions published in 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Leon Cooper's somewhat peripatetic career has resulted in work in quantum field theory, superconductivity, the quantum theory of measurement as well as the mechanisms that underly learning and memory. He has written numerous essays on a variety of subjects as well as a highly regarded introduction to the ideas and methods of physics for non-physicists. Among the many accolades, he has received (some deserved) one he likes specially is the comment of an anonymous reviewer who characterized him as "a nonsense physicist". This compilation of papers presents the evolution of his thinking on mechanisms of learning, memory storage and higher brain function. The first half proceeds from early models of memory and synaptic plasticity to a concrete theory that has been put into detailed correspondence with experiment and leads to the very current exploration of the molecular basis for learning and memory storage. The second half outlines his efforts to investigate the properties of neural network systems and to explore to what extent they can be applied to real world problems. In all this collection, hopefully, provides a coherent, no-nonsense, account of a line of research that leads to present investigations into the biological basis for learning and memory storage and the information processing and classification properties of neural systems

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those individ uals who helped us assemble this text, including the people of Lockheed Sanders and Nestor, Inc., whose encouragement and support were greatly appreciated. In addition, we would like to thank the members of the Lab oratory for Engineering Man-Machine Systems (LEMS) and the Center for Neural Science at Brown University for their frequent and helpful discussions on a number of topics discussed in this text. Although we both attended Brown from 1983 to 1985, and had offices in the same building, it is surprising that we did not meet until 1988. We also wish to thank Kluwer Academic Publishers for their profes sionalism and patience, and the reviewers for their constructive criticism. Thanks to John McCarthy for performing the final proof, and to John Adcock, Chip Bachmann, Deborah Farrow, Nathan Intrator, Michael Perrone, Ed Real, Lance Riek and Paul Zemany for their comments and assistance. We would also like to thank Khrisna Nathan, our most unbi ased and critical reviewer, for his suggestions for improving the content and accuracy of this text. A special thanks goes to Steve Hoffman, who was instrumental in helping us perform the experiments described in Chapter 9

Correlation of Afferent Activity and Binocular Receptive Field Properties by Michael A Paradiso( Book )

2 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A theoretical model of synaptic plasticity is used to examine the importance of the correlation of left eye and right eye afferent activities for the development of binocular receptive field properties in visual cortex. Generally, cortical cells that receive less binocularly correlated activity become less binocular. We argue that larger disparity decreases correlation and larger receptive field size increases correlation. Therefore, the consequences of normal uncorrelated activity are: first, disparity selective neurons that are optimally stimulated at the horopter tend to be more binocular than cells selective for nonzero disparities. Second, cortical cells with large receptive fields tend to be more binocular and can maintain larger disparities than small-field cells. Third, low levels of uncorrelated activity allow changes in ocular dominance that accentuate any ocular dominance organization present prior to visual experience. The model also readily accounts for the loss of binocularity caused by monocular deprivation, alternating occlusion, and strabismus

THEORY OF MULTIPLE COULOMB SCATTERING FROM EXTENDED NUCLEI( Book )

2 editions published in 1954 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Two independent methods are described for calculating the multiple scattering distribution for projected angle scattering resulting when very high energy charged particles traverse a thick scatterer. The single scattering law for projected angle scattering is taken to be the Rutherford scattering law for projected angle scattering modified at small angles by electron shielding and at large angles by a nuclear form factor F[sub n]([phi]/[phi][sub o]) which gives the effect of the finite nuclear size. The calculations can be carried through for any reasonable choice of F[sub n] and have been carried through for two suggested choices of F[sub n] for the examples of fast [mu]-meson scattering in 2 cm and 5 cm thick lead slabs, with good agreement for the two methods of calculation. The results are compared with the theories of Moliere and Olbert
