Spatial disparities are a measure of the unequal distribution of income, wealth, power and resources between peoples in different locations. Attacking poverty by World Bank ( Book )
8 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 307 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Poor people live without fundamental freedoms of action and choice that the better-off take for granted. They often lack adequate food and shelter, education and health, deprivations that keep them from leading the kind of life that everyone values. They also face extreme vulnerability to ill health, economic dislocation, and natural disasters. And they are often exposed to ill treatment by institutions of the state and society and are powerless to influence key decisions affecting their lives. At the start of a new century, poverty remains a global problem of huge proportions. Of the world's 6 billion people, 2.8 billion live on less than $2 a day and 1.2 billion on less than $1 a day. Eight out of every 100 infants do not live to see their fifth birthday. Nine of every 100 boys and 14 of every 100 girls who reach school age do not attend school. Poverty is also evident in poor people's lack of political power and voice and in their extreme vulnerability to ill health, economic dislocation, personal violence and natural disasters. And the scourge of HIV/AIDS, the frequency and brutality of civil conflicts, and rising disparities between rich countries and the developing world have increased the sense of deprivation and injustice for many." -- from

"Development assistance is beset by two challenges; its past ineffectivenness in achieving the objectives of development and poverty reduction, and the emergence of a range of transnational problems affecting both developed and developing countries. How can aid be delivered more effectively? And how can it assist in international public goods which solve transnational problems? In this essay, the authors propose a twofold framework to guide development assistance: an approach to country-focused aid that would minimize coordination difficulties and enhance recipient country ownership, and a nuanced scheme for the provision of international public goods."--BOOK JACKET

This public recognition has gone hand in hand with the affection and admiration that Amartya's friends and students hold for him. This volume of essays, written in honor of his 75th birthday by his students and peers, covers the range of contributions that Sen has made to knowledge. The 20th century witnessed global processes of urbanization on an unprecedented scale, to the extent that for the first time in human history more than half of the world's population now lives in urban areas. Latin America is the developing world's most urbanized region, with over 75 per cent of its population currently residing in towns and cities. As such, it in many ways arguably constitutes something of an 'urban laboratory'. Although many of its urbanization trends are regionally specific, there also exist clear commonalities with other regions of the world, and much can be learned from the Latin American experience and the future direction it is taking. This volume presents an original collection of studies drawn from a range of disciplines that highlight some of the key issues regarding the changing nature of contemporary urban life in Latin America, and the consequences of its transformation for development more generally
