On the characteristics of animals by Aelian ( Book )
34 editions published between 1958 and 1984 in 5 languages and held by 1,090 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
AELIAN (Claudius Aelianus), a Roman born c. A.D. 170 at Praeneste (where he held a religious office), was a pupil of the rhetorician Pausanias of Caesarea, and taught and practised rhetoric. Expert in good Attic Greek, he became a serious scholar and studied history under the patronage of the Roman Empress Julia Domna. He apparently spent all his life in Italy where he died after A.D. 230. In three volumes we present his On the Characteristics of Animals, in 17 books, which is a mixed collection of facts and beliefs concerning the habits of animals taken from Greek authors with some personal observation, and having as their chief object entertainment. Fact, fancy, legend, stories and gossip all play their part in a narrative which has, of set purpose, no arrangement. If there is any ethical motive, it is that the virtues of untaught yet reasoning animals can be a lesson to thoughtless and selfish mankind. Aelian's philosophy is an easy stoicism. Another surviving work is 'Varied History' in 14 books, consisting mainly of historical, biographical, and antiquarian anecdotes and short narratives, many of them taken from authors whose works are lost. Here also Aelian follows no scheme of arrangement. We have also fragments of a work on 'Providence' and one on 'Divine Manifestations' and these also were apparently collections of stories. Some Letters, by fictitious persons, on husbandry and other country matters survive -- these are rhetorical
Historical miscellany by Aelian ( Book )

Here then are anecdotes about the famous Greek philosophers, poets, historians, and playwrights; myths instructively retold; moralizing tales about heroes and rulers, athletes and wise men; reports about styles in dress, foods and drink, lovers, gift-giving practices, entertainments, religious beliefs and death customs; and comments on Greek painting. Some of the information is not preserved in any other source. Underlying it all are Aelian's Stoic ideals as well as this Roman's great admiration for the culture of the Greeks (whose language he borrowed for his writings)
{Aelian's} on the nature of animals by Aelian ( )
5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 511 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Selections from Aelian's De Natura Animalium, translated and edited by Gregory McNamee, are a mostly randomly ordered collection of stories that constitute an early encyclopedia of animal behavior, affording insight into what ancient Romans knew about and thought about animals--and, of particular interest to modern scholars, about animal minds"--Provided by publisher

"More than 140 years have gone by since R. Hercher's 1864 Teubner edition, a book with serious editorial shortcomings which have been often underlined in recent publications. This new text offers an accurate and new critical edition as a result of an extensive and detailed work undertook by a team of scholars of the University of Oviedo (Spain), under the direction of the Professor Manuela García Valdés. The text has been established on the basis of a complete collation of all the most significant manuscripts of Aelians' textual tradition. This is the first edition with an accurate and scientific critical apparatus by applying the scope of textual criticism and ecdotics. The edition also takes into account the literary koiné of II-III centuries AD and the authors' own style. This edition offers to all scholars a reliable text as a starting point for future research on Aelians' Language and Stoic thought. It will be also useful for studies on zoology, on animals' habits and behaviour, medieval bestiaries, and on the concepts of Science and Technique in Late Antiquity. Confronted with his wealth of materials, the author writes each chapter as a finished unit, as a short story. He uses a wide variety of both literary and linguistic expedients, resorting to formal and content resources."--Publisher's website

The letters of Alciphron, Aelian and Philostratus by Alciphron ( Book )
24 editions published between 1949 and 1990 in 4 languages and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The letters of ALCIPHRON (second century A.D.), a contemporary of Lucian, constitute one of the most attractive products of the Second Sophistic. They are fictitious compositions based on an astonishingly wide variety of circumstances, though the theme of erotic love is constantly sounded. But the imagination shown by the author and his convincing realism win him a place of distinction in the early development of romantic prose. The letters, which are highly literary, owing much to the New Comedy of Menander, purport to give us a sketch of the social life of Athens in the fourth century B.C. The collection is arranged in four divisions: Letters of Fishermen; Farmers; Parasites; Courtesans. Senders and addressees are mostly invented characters, but in the last section Alciphron presents us with several attempts at historical fiction, the most engaging being an exchange of letters between Menander and Glycera. This volume also includes twenty Letters of Farmers ascribed to AELIAN (c.A.D. 170-235) and a collection of seventy-three Erotic Epistles of PHILOSTRATUS (probably Flavius of that name, also born c.A.D. 170). In style and subject-matter these resemble those of Alciphron, by whom they may have been influenced, but they hardly excel them
