A history of Russian architecture by William Craft Brumfield( Book )

28 editions published between 1993 and 2005 in English and held by 1,285 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A History of Russian Architecture, the most comprehensive study of this subject to date, surveys the development of Russian architecture, from the masonry churches of tenth-century Kievan Rus to the prefabricated built environments of the present. Subject to cultural and stylistic influences from both east and west, Russian architecture nonetheless developed its own distinctive approaches to building, as demonstrated in the four parts of this study: early medieval Rus up to the Mongol invasion in the midtwelfth century; the revival of architecture in Novgorod and Muscovy from the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries; the cultural revolution of architecture during the reigns of Peter the Great and his successors in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries; and the advent of modern architecture, ranging from the colorful eclecticism of the nineteenth century to the rigorous experiments in avant-garde design of the early twentieth century, which were followed by a return to monumental eclecticism in the Soviet period. Analyzing stylistic developments within their historical contexts, this volume serves as a rich cultural history that will be invaluable to scholars and general readers alike. Lavishly illustrated, A History of Russian Architecture includes line drawings, plans and elevations, and a full complement of photographs taken by the author

Lost Russia : photographing the ruins of Russian architecture by William Craft Brumfield( Book )

8 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 547 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The twentieth century in Russia has been a cataclysm of rare proportions, as war, revolution, famine, and massive political terror tested the limits of human endurance. The results of this assault on Russian culture are particularly evident in ruined architectural monuments, some of which are little known even within Russia itself. Over the past two decades William Craft Brumfield, noted historian of Russian architecture, has traveled throughout Russia and photographed many of these neglected, lost buildings, haunting in their ruin. Lost Russia provides a unique view of Brumfield's acclaimed work, which illuminates Russian culture as reflected in these remnants of its distinctive architectural traditions." "Capturing the quiet, ineffable beauty that graces these buildings, these photographs are accompanied by a text that provides not only a brief historical background for Russian architecture, but also Brumfield's personal impressions, thoughts, and insights on the structures he views. Churches and monasteries from the fifteenth to the twentieth century as well as abandoned, ruined manor houses are shown - ravaged by time, willful neglect, and cultural vandalism." "In addition to the ruins of Russian architecture, Lost Russia illustrates examples of recent local initiatives to preserve cultural landmarks from steady decline and destruction. The book concludes with photographs of the remarkable log architecture found in Russia's far north, culminating with the Church of the Transfiguration on the island of Kizhi - itself in imminent danger owing to the lack of such preservation efforts."--Jacket
The origins of modernism in Russian architecture by William Craft Brumfield( Book )

10 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 515 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Russian architecture from the Great Reforms of the 1860s to the 1917 revolution constitutes a prolific episode in a tradition marked by sudden radical shifts in style. During this period Russian society experienced intense, if uneven, change that included among its several ramifications innovative developments in technology, engineering, and the art of building. Yet the period lacks the dominant architectural style that distinguished, for example, the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, when structure and ornamentation revealed the very spirit of an age

Architecture at the end of the earth : photographing the Russian North by William Craft Brumfield( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Carpeted in boreal forests, dotted with lakes, cut by rivers, and straddling the Arctic Circle, the region surrounding the White Sea, which is known as the Russian North, is sparsely populated and immensely isolated. It is also the home to architectural marvels, as many of the original wooden and brick churches and homes in the region's ancient villages and towns still stand. Featuring nearly two hundred full color photographs of these beautiful centuries-old structures, Architecture at the End of the Earth is the most recent addition to William Craft Brumfield's ongoing project to photographically document all aspects of Russian architecture
