Infinity and the mind : the science and philosophy of the infinite by Rudy v. B Rucker( Book )

73 editions published between 1982 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 2,886 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work brings together the limits of science and the furthest horizons of the imagination. With wit and ease, Rucker leads us through the arguments of mathematicians, physicists and philosophers, through the paradoxes of set theory, the mind-stretching concepts of space/time physics, and the staggering results of Godels incompleteness theorems. Rucker's own personal encounters with Godel the man, the mathematician and the philosopher provide a rare glimpse at genius, and reveal what very few mathematicians have dared to admit - the transcedent implications of Platonic realism. Infinity and the mind is for anyone who has pondered the immensity of the cosmos; for anyone who has tried to imagine the infinitely large and the infinitesimally small. It is a book for lovers of paradoxes and ideas - the very limits of science and mind

Rudy Rucker presents an accessible introduction to each of these important areas, reflecting intelligence gathered from the frontiers of mathematical thought. More than 100 drawings illuminate explorations of digital versus analog processes, logic as a computing tool, communication as information transmission, and other "mind tools.""Mind Tools is an original and fascinating look at various aspects of mathematics that is sure to fascinate the nonmathematician." - Isaac Asimov "A lighthearted romp through contemporary mathematics. . . . Mind Tools is a delight." - San Francisco Chronicle"For those who gave up college mathematics for what seemed more liberal arts, Rudy Rucker's book, Mind Tools, is a dazzling refresher course. . . . He rekindles the wonder that can come from contemplating logarithms, exponential curves and transcendental numbers." - The New York Times Book Review"One of Rucker's greatest assets is his ability to make complexities comprehensible to the general reader without lecturing." - The Washington Post"Approaching all of mathematics, and everything else, by way of information theory, Dr. Rucker's latest and most exciting book opens vistas of dazzling beauty - scenes that blend order with chaos, reality with fantasy, that startle you with their depths of impenetrable mystery." - Martin Gardner

Geometry, relativity, and the fourth dimension by Rudy v. B Rucker( Book )

18 editions published between 1977 and 2015 in English and Japanese and held by 1,010 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a highly readable, popular exposition of the fourth dimension and the structure of the universe. A remarkable pictorial dimension and the structure of the universe. A remarkable pictorial discussion of the curved space-time we call home, it achieves even greater impact through the use of 141 excellent illustrations. This is the first sustained visual account of many important topics in relativity theory that up till now have only been treated separately. Finding a perfect analogy in the situation of the geometrical characters in Flatland, Professor Rucker continues the adventures of the two-dimensional world in terms of the fourth dimension. Following this adventure into the fourth dimension, the author discusses non-Euclidean geometry, curved space, time as a higher dimension, special relativity, time travel, and the shape of space-time. The mathematics is sound throughout, but the casual reader may skip those few sections that seem too purely mathematical and still follow the line of argument. Readable and interesting in itself, the annotated bibliography is a valuable guide to further study. -- from back cover

5 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the twenty-first century, we no longer think of reality as particles and force fields. Instead, scientists and philosophers view the world as a sea of computation. The Lifebox, the Seashell, and the Soul explains and expends upon this new way to understand nature, society, and the mind." "In Lifebox, Rudy Rucker uses whimsical drawings, fables, and humor to demonstrate that everything is a computation - that thoughts, computations, and physical processes are all the same. He discusses the linguistic and computational advances that make this kind of "digital philosophy" possible, and explains how, like every great new principle, the computational worldview contains the seeds of a next step"--Jacket

Fourfield : computers, art & the 4th dimension by Tony Robbin( Book )

6 editions published in 1992 in English and French and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although a fascination with the fourth dimension and the search for ways of depicting it have engaged artists for more than a century, only the computer makes such depiction truly possible. Using the computer as a tool, painter and sculptor Tony Robbin has devoted his life as an artist to this quest. Fourfield is both a record of that quest and an eloquent testament to the value of its fulfillment. The understanding and appreciation of space as presented in works of art have changed over the centuries, and Robbin suggests that the time is ripe for our perception of space to undergo another radical shift. He makes clear that "seeing" space in three dimensions is merely a culturally based assumption, no more and no less valid than apprehending space in any other way. This realization frees us to understand space much as a computer might--as fluid, ever changing, and dynamic. It has also freed Robbin to create exhilarating and amazing works, derived from his original blending of art, science, and mathematics. Fourfield is a firsthand account of the artist's visual, intellectual, and philosophical evolution, which has taken him from paintings in a traditional two-dimensional format to those in which rods extending from the canvas and the shadows they produce present a visual experience of four dimensions. Most recently, Robbin has created sculpture that incorporates quasicrystals ("crystals" made up of nonrepeating patterns) and whose appearance varies with the viewer's position and the orientation of light. This experimentation is suggesting startling new directions in architecture as well. To assist the reader in comprehending this seemingly magical world, Fourfield comes with an image of a pattern of four-dimensional cubes, known as hypercubes, and special glasses through which to view it. Also included is an order form for a diskette containing a number of the computer programs developed by Robbin as he explored the world of computers and art. Written with a voice of eloquence and clarity for anyone interested in art, science, mathematics, computers, or philosophy, Fourfield is, however, not for the timid. Just as Douglas Hofstadter's Godel, Escher, Bach and Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance altered their readers' perceptions, readers of Fourfield will find their way of seeing the world changed forever

5 editions published between 2006 and 2009 in English and held by 335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Much cyberpunk SF is grimly noir in depicting future-shocked people trapped by their limitations, but in this collection of 19 laid-back yarns, Rucker finds human dilemmas much too important to take seriously. "Jenna and Me," for example, co-written with his son Rudy Rucker Jr., shows President Bush's daughter brain-wiped by agents of the "conspiracy elite," but eventually becoming the unwitting focus for an alien invasion that may remake humanity for the better
