Die 15-jährige Jeanne (Hummer) lebt mit ihren Eltern Clara und Hans (Auer, Müller), ehemalige RAF-Terroristen, im Untergrund in Portugal - immer auf der Hut vor der Enttarnung. Als Jeanne sich in den Surfer Heinrich (Bilge Bingül) verliebt, muss die Familie das Land übereilt verlassen, weil ihre Identität aufzufliegen droht. Zurück in Deutschland versuchen sie alte Kontakte zur Szene zu bemühen, um sich finanziell über Wasser zu halten.Petzolds Kinodebüt "Die innere Sicherheit" ist eine subtile, authentisch wirkende Psychostudie über die Spätfolgen des Terrorismus der 70er. Dass Hans und Clara RAF-Terroristen sind, wird im Film niemals ausgesprochen, ist nur zwischen den Zeilen abzulesen. Jungdarstellerin Julia Hummer ("Crazy", "Absolute Giganten") dominiert das Drama und kann erneut ihr großes Talent beweisen. Zudem ist die Figur der Jeanne der am besten herausgearbeitete Charakter der Geschichte. Barbara Auer und Richy Müller bleiben dagegen blass, weil sie von den Drehbuchautoren zu nahezu völliger Emotionslosigkeit verdammt sind
