Resenha: Paulo Makun narra a história Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, um desbravador do século XVI. Neto de um guerreiro, o fidalgo espanhol deixou sua casa em Jerez de la Frontera quando adolescente, para se tornar soldado profissional. Lutou na Itália e foi gravemente ferido. Recuperado, serviu como camareiro de um duque e envolveu-se em várias peripécias. Depois de combater um movimento rebelde, embarcou rumo à Flórida, na condição de tesoureiro real. Cabeza de Vaca sobreviveu a três naufrágios, curou índios, atravessou nu e descalço, parte dos atuais Estados Unidos e México, voltou à Espanha e obteve um cargo como recompensa por suas desditas. Depois de nova viagem, tomou posse de Santa Catarina, na condição de seu primeiro governador. Atravessou a pé o território brasileiro, chegando a Assunção. Dali, partiu novamente em busca de uma serra misteriosa, feita de prata, até ser imobilizado pela malária. Ao retornar à cidade, foi deposto por seus opositores. Passou quase um ano preso e voltou para casa como traidor e prisioneiro, quando um temporal mudou sua sorte mais uma vez. Para reconstituir essa história, Paulo Markun confrontou a obra autobiográfica de Cabeza de Vaca com os depoimentos de testemunhas ouvidas em vários processos judiciais na Espanha
