Nonequilibrium problems in manyparticle systems : lectures given at the 3rd Session of the Centro internazionale matematico
estivo (C.I.M.E.) held in Montecatini, Italy, June 1527, 1992 by
L Arkeryd(
Book
)
6 editions published in 1993 in English and Undetermined and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume contains the text of four sets of lectures delivered at the third session of the Summer School organized by C.I.M.E. (Centro Internazionale Matematico Estivo). These texts are preceded by an introduction written by C. Cercignani and M. Pulvirenti which summarizes the present status in the area of Nonequilibrium Problems in ManyParticle Systems and tries to put the contents of the different sets of lectures in the right perspective, in order to orient the reader. The lectures deal with the global existence of weak solutions for kinetic models and related topics, the basic concepts of nonstandard analysis and their application to gas kinetics, the kinetic equations for semiconductors and the entropy methods in the study of hydrodynamic limits. CONTENTS: C. Cercignani, M. Pulvirenti: Nonequilibrium Problems in ManyParticle Systems. An Introduction. L. Arkeryd: Some Examples of NSA in Kinetic Theory. P.L. Lions: Global Solutions of Kinetic Models and Related Problems. P.A. Markowich: Kinetic Models for Semiconductors. S.R.S. Varadhan: Entropy Methods in Hydrodynamic Scaling

Minimization problems in L¹(R³) by
P. L Lions(
Book
)
5 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this paper, minimization problems in L1(IR3) are considered. These problems arise in astrophysics for the determination of equilibrium configurations of axially symmetric rotating fluids (rotating stars). Under nearly optimal assumptions a minimizer is proved to exist by a direct variational method, which uses heavily the symmetry of the problem in order to get some compactness. Finally, by looking directly at the Euler equation, we give some existence results (of solutions of the Euler equation) even if the infimum is not finite. (Author)

Asymptotic behavior of some nonlinear heat equations by
P. L Lions(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this paper a semilinear heat equation with a convex nonlinearity is considered. The asymptotic behavior of the solutions is completely determined and this gives, in particular, a very precise description of the global stability of stationary solutions. (Author)

"Que sont les simulations numériques et à quoi serventelle? Il s'agit de problèmes de mathématiques appliquée dans lesquels on essaie de résoudre numériquement des moldèles d'origine physique, biologique, économique, financier ... L'outil indispensable à ces résolutions sont les EDP (équations aux dérivées partielles), équations qui mélangent les différentes dérivées d'une fonction

The dynamics of inequality by
Xavier Gabaix(
Book
)
7 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The past forty years have seen a rapid rise in top income inequality in the United States. While there is a large number of existing theories of the Pareto tails of the income and wealth distributions at a given point in time, almost none of these address the fast rise in top inequality observed in the data. We show that standard theories, which build on a random growth mechanism, generate transition dynamics that are an order of magnitude too slow relative to those observed in the data. We then suggest parsimonious deviations from the basic model that can explain such changes, namely heterogeneity in mean growth rates or deviations from Gibrat's law. These deviations are consistent with theories in which the increase in top income inequality is driven by the rise of "superstar" entrepreneurs or managers

On Existence and Uniqueness of Solutions of HamiltonJacobi Equations by
Michael G Crandall(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The theory of scalar first order nonlinear partial differential equations has been enjoying a rapid development in the last few years. This development occurred because the authors established uniqueness criteria for generalized solutions called viscosity solutions which correctly identify the solutions sought in areas of application, including control theory, differential games and the calculus of variations. The concept of viscosity solutions is relatively easy to work with and many formally heuristic or difficult proofs have been made rigorous or simple using this concept. A feedback process has begun and the experience recently gained in working with viscosity solution has suggested new existence and uniqueness results. The current paper continues this interaction by establishing new existence ane uniqueness results in a natural generality suggested by earlier proofs. It is also felt that the presentation of the comparison results, which imply uniqueness, continuous dependence, and are used to estimate moduli of continuity, has something to offer over earlier presentations in special cases.(Author)
