Apparently the remains of an officcial archive. A considerable number of Greek texts come from Oxyrhyncha, a small village to the north of Tebtunis. These include Homeric fragments, portions of Sophocles' play Inachus, Ptolemaic and other official documents, an extensive land survey, taxation returns and revenue in kind, and private accounts, correspondence, and agreements. Numerous accounts, lists of names, and amounts of money or land, in Demotic, are also found. These texts date between from ca. 300 to ca. 130 B.C., when Egypt was controlled by the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty
