This series contains the records of the Director of the Textile Research Department, Thomas D. Efland. The records include correspondence, publications, photographs, and research reports. The records span the years 1955-1969; they are arranged alphabetically by subject. The correspondence documents the operation and activities of the department under Rainey and Efland. Principal correspondents include executives of textile companies in the southeast, for example, J.P. Stevens and Deering Milliken; chemical companies such as Dow Chemical, Dupont, and Proctor and Gamble; officials with the United States Department of Agriculture; officers of professional societies and associations such as American Association of Textile Chemists, National Cotton Council, and the National Council for Textile Education; and University faculty and staff. Some files relate to Efland's service as the treasurer and chair of the American Association for Textile Technology. Many of the research reports within the records pertain to relationships between fabrics and color, fabrics and the chemicals exposed to them, and techniques of material fabrication (natural and synthetic)
