In den achtziger Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts vollzog sich in der dänischen Kunst die entscheidende Wende zur Moderne. Der Prozess, der auch die Gesellschaft erfasste, war so umfassend, dass man heute von der Epoche des "modernen Durchbruchs" spricht. Die Künstler zeigten das Leben mit einem neuen, realistischen Blick und die Landschaft mit einem besonderen Gespür für Licht und Atmosphäre. Die Sammlung Hirschsprung in Kopenhagen besitzt eine der hochwertigsten und umfangreichsten Kollektionen dänischer Malerei des 19. Jahrhunderts. In ihr sind alle wichtigen Künstler dieser Zeit vertreten: von den Malern des "Goldenen Zeitalters" in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zu den späteren dänischen Impressionisten und Symbolisten. Das Buch, das begleitend zur Ausstellung in der Hamburger Kunsthalle erscheint, bietet eine Übersicht über diese bedeutende Epoche aus der Sammlung Hirschsprung
