Techniques in teaching vocabulary by Virginia French Allen( Book )

28 editions published between 1983 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 708 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A manual for teaching vocabulary to students of English as a second language is introduced by a discussion of the reasons for neglecting vocabulary development in the past and the reasons for the present emphasis on it. The chapters that follow develop practical instructional methods for each language learning level. The topics include: (1) vocabulary lessons for the first stage of classroom language exposure; (2) more techniques for beginners' classes; (3) special uses of visual aids; (4) teaching vocabulary in intermediate classes; (5) accommodating differences among intermediate students; (6) new and more specialized kinds of meanings for intermediate classes; (7) basic techniques for advanced classes; (8) comprehension and production in advanced classes; and (9) choosing vocabulary words and evaluating their mastery. Appendixes include: an illustration of "picturable actions," 300 useful adjectives, 1200 useful nouns and verbs, suggested questions for conversations and correspondence with native speakers, an introductory crossword puzzle, and sample questions from the Test of English as a Foreign Language. English sounds and their spellings; a handbook for teachers and students by Robert L Allen( Book )

11 editions published between 1966 and 1971 in English and held by 156 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This handbook introduces the important correspondences existing between English sounds and English spelling patterns. The lessons present the vowel sounds, one by one, along with systematically selected consonant sounds, and show how each sound or combination of sounds is usually spelled in English words. Irregularly spelled words are introduced gradually, their pronunciation indicated by means of familiar symbols that eliminate the need for phonetic notation. The rationale underlying the system of symbols used is presented in the Epilogue. The text may be used, however, without a special study of the rationale. In addition to introducing, illustrating, and explaining sounds and spelling patterns, each lesson provides practice in hearing, saying, reading, and writing words that contain the sound and letter combinations featured in that lesson or in earlier lessons. While the authors feel that the text "offers the greatest help to new students who are just beginning to learn English," the sections of facts and explanations may be used by more advanced students and by teachers of English as a second or foreign language, or by teachers of standard English as a second dialect. Twenty 16 mm sound films, providing practical information and models for imitation, are now available for this handbook from Pathescope Educational Films, Inc., 71 Weyman Ave., New Rochelle, N.Y. 10802. The list includes a few ''red herrings'' to make your choices more demanding. Of the fifty puzzles, eight involve well-known phrases and four are ''reversed,'' where you put an English word into the grid. If you took Latin long ago, you'll find this an enjoyable way to study it de novo (anew). If Latin is terra incognita (an unknown area) for you, the puzzles will help expand your English vocabulary as well as your knowledge of Latin.
