The jackknife, the bootstrap, and other resampling plans by Bradley Efron( Book )

48 editions published between 1980 and 1994 in English and Undetermined and held by 766 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The jackknife and the bootstrap are nonparametric methods for assessing the errors in a statistical estimation problem. They provide several advantages over the traditional parametric approach: the methods are easy to describe and they apply to arbitrarily complicated situations; distribution assumptions, such as normality, are never made. This monograph connects the jackknife, the bootstrap, and many other related ideas such as cross-validation, random subsampling, and balanced repeated replications into a unified exposition. The theoretical development is at an easy mathematical level and is supplemented by a large number of numerical examples. The methods described in this monograph form a useful set of tools for the applied statistician. They are particularly useful in problem areas where complicated data structures are common, for example, in censoring, missing data, and highly multivariate situations

Computer age statistical inference : algorithms, evidence, and data science by Bradley Efron( Book )

9 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 126 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The twenty-first century has seen a breathtaking expansion of statistical methodology, both in scope and in influence. 'Big data', 'data science', and 'machine learning' have become familiar terms in the news, as statistical methods are brought to bear upon the enormous data sets of modern science and commerce. How did we get here? And where are we going? This book takes us on an exhilarating journey through the revolution in data analysis following the introduction of electronic computation in the 1950s. Beginning with classical inferential theories - Bayesian, frequentist, Fisherian - individual chapters take up a series of influential topics: survival analysis, logistic regression, empirical Bayes, the jackknife and bootstrap, random forests, neural networks, Markov chain Monte Carlo, inference after model selection, and dozens more. The distinctly modern approach integrates methodology and algorithms with statistical inference. The book ends with speculation on the future direction of statistics and data science. -- Provided by publisher

Multivariate empirical Bayes and estimation of covariance matrices by Bradley Efron( Book )

4 editions published between 1970 and 1974 in English and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The problem of estimating a covariance matrix in the standard multivariate normal situation is considered. The loss function is one obtained naturally from the problem of estimating several normal mean vectors in an empirical Bayes Situation. Estimators which dominate any constant multiple of the sample covariance matrix are presented. These estimators work by shrinking the sample eigenvalues toward a central value, in much the same way as the James-Stein estimator for a mean vector shrinks the maximum likelihood estimators toward a common value
Families of minimax estimators of the mean of a multivariate normal distribution by Bradley Efron( Book )

4 editions published between 1970 and 1974 in English and held by 54 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ever since Charles Stein proved that for squared error loss the sample mean X of a multivariate normal distribution is an inadmissible estimator of its expectation theta, statisticians have searched for uniformly better (minimax) estimators with good properties. Stein has found an unbiased estimator for the risk function of an arbitrary estimator of theta, when the dispersion matrix sigma of X is known. The authors extend this very useful result to include unbiased estimates of the risk function in two cases where sigma must be estimated. This formula is used in the main theorem, to obtain more general conditions than previously published. Finally it is proven that the limited translation estimators, which are not orthogonally invariant, of Efron and Morris are minimax

Optimum evasion versus systematic search by Bradley Efron( Book )

2 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The solution of the following hide and seek game is presented: At each move Player I, the evader, is allowed to hide in one room, while Player II, the searcher, is allowed to search some given number of rooms. The restriction is made that Player II searches without repetition, that is, he is never allowed to return to a room he has previously searched. It is shown that if the payoff to Player I is any increasing function of the number of moves before capture, his best strategy is also never to return to a room in which he has previously hidden. A formula for the value of the game is presented
The convex hull of a random set of points by Bradley Efron( Book )

3 editions published between 1964 and 1965 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Various expectations concerning the convex hull of N independently and identically distributed random points in the plane or in space were evaluated. Integral expressions were given for the expected area, expected perimeter, expected probability content, and expected number of sides. These integrals were shown to be particularly simple when the underlying distribution is normal or uniform over a disk or sphere. (Author)

The bootstrap method for assessing statistical accuracy by Bradley Efron( Book )

5 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is an invited review of bootstrap methods. It begins with an exposition of the bootstrap estimate of standard error for one-sample situations. Several examples, some involving quite complicated statistical procedures, are given. The bootstrap is then extended to other measures of statistical accuracy, like bias and prediction error, and to complicated data structures such as time series, censored data, and regression models. Several more examples are presented illustrating these ideas. The last third of the paper deals mainly with bootstrap confidence intervals. The paper ends with a FORTRAN program for bootstrap standard errors
