En Worpswede, una pequeña localidad de la Baja Sajonia, comenzaron a establecerse a finales del siglo xix diversos pintores que llegaron a constituir una auténtica colonia de artistas, amparados por la armonía de su paisaje y el austero discurrir de sus días. Acuciado económicamente y deseoso de asentarse junto a su esposa y su hija recién nacida, Rilke llega a Worpswede en el otoño de 1900 para realizar el encargo de escribir una monografía sobre la colonia y sus integrantes. En un género ensayístico al que dota de una belleza rara y subyugante, traza Rilke un retrato -más lírico que analítico- de quienes considera el núcleo esencial del grupo pictórico (Fritz Mackensen, Otto Mondersohn, Fritz Overbeck, Hans am Ende y Heinrich Vogeler), tras una introducción, magistral y genuinamente rilkeana, donde busca profundizar en la esencia del paisaje en su vinculación con la pintura: Rilke «evita juzgar» y, enfrentado a la tarea de «escribir la historia del paisaje», se encuentra «abandonado a merced de lo extraño, lo distinto, lo inconcebible», pues el paisaje «no tiene figura […], no expresa una voluntad cuando se mueve», y, ante la naturaleza, «por muy misteriosa que sea la muerte, más misteriosa aún es una vida que no es nuestra vida, que no se interesa por nosotros y, en cierto modo sin vernos, celebra sus fiestas, a las que asistimos con un cierto apuro, como invitados que llegan por casualidad y que hablan otro idioma». Ilustrada con una veintena de muestras pictóricas de los protagonistas, esta obra se presenta al lector por vez primera traducida al español. (Trea)
