Distribution, abundance, behavior and bioacoustics of endangered whales in the western Beaufort and northeastern Chukchi seas, 1979-87 : final report( Book )

3 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Aerial surveys of bowhead whales and, secondarily, other marine mammals were made from 1 Sep - 23 Oct 1987 in the western Beaufort and northeastern Chukchi Seas. A shore-based acoustic monitoring station was maintained at Barrow, Alaska from 9 Sept 21 Oct 1987 to record the calls of migrating bowhead whales as they passed into the northeastern Chukchi Sea. Survey results and observations on bowhead whale distribution, relative abundance and density, migration patterns, general behavior, and sound production are presented. Presented also are survey results and observations on gray whale distribution, relative abundance, and general behavior on belukha and walrus distribution, and relative abundance. Incidental sightings of all marine mammals are reported. This report also summarizes the study efforts made between 1979 and 1987. Keywords: Balaena mysticetus, Eschrichtius robustus, Geographical distribution, Autumn, Marine biological noise, Tracking, Alaska, Chukchi Sea, Beaufort Sea, Animal migration, Whale population, Habitat, Whale behavior, Population density. Distribution, abundance, behavior and bioacoustics of endangered whales in the Alaskan Beaufort and eastern Chukchi seas, 1979-86( Book )

4 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Aerial surveys and acoustic recordings of bowhead whales and, secondarily, other marine mammals were made from mid-August 1986 through October 1986 in the eastern Chukchi and Alaskan Beaufort Sea. In addition, a shore-based acoustic station was established on Barter Island, Alaska to record the calls of migrating bowhead whales as they passed through the eastern Alaskan Beaufort Sea. Survey results and observations on bowhead whale distribution, relative abundance and density, migration patterns, general behavior, and sound production are presented. Presented here also are survey results and observations on gray whale distribution, relative abundance, and general behavior. Incidental sightings of all marine mammals are reported

Aerial surveys of endangered whales in the Beaufort, Chukchi, & northern Bering seas by D. K Ljungblad( Book )

4 editions published between 1981 and 1982 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Aerial surveys and acoustic recordings of bowhead whales and other marine mammals were made from 17 April to 4 November 1980 in the Beaufort, Chukchi, and Bering Seas. The spring and fall migrations past the lease areas were monitored closely to determine whale distribution. Ice conditions, which are fully discussed, radically changed the migration pattern from that of the 1979 season. Unusual and distinctively marked whales were noted during the spring and fall migrations, and a stranding was investigated. The 1979 acoustic recordings have been analyzed and are provided in an appendix. (Author)
Aerial surveys of endangered whales in the northern Bering, eastern Chukchi, and Alaskan Beaufort seas, 1984 : with a six year review, 1979-1984( Book )

2 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Aerial surveys and acoustic recordings of bowhead whales and, secondarily, other marine mammals were made from mid-April through mid-May and from mid-July through October 1984 in the northern Bering, eastern Chukchi, and Alaskan Beaufort Seas. Survey results and observations of bowhead distribution, relative abundance, migration patterns, general behavior, and sound production for spring and fall seasons are presented. Presented here also are survey results and observations on gray whale distribution, relative abundance, and general behavior. Incidental sightings of all marine mammals are reported. (Author)
Survey of oceanographic and meteorological parameters of importance to the site selection of an Ocean Food and Energy Farm (OFEF) in the eastern Pacific : final report, July 1975-September 1976 : prepared for U.S. Energy Research & Development Administration by P. F Seligman( Book )

3 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Oceanographic and meteorological parameters necessary for selection of productive Ocean Food and Energy Farm (OFEF) sites are presented and compared for the eastern Pacific Ocean. Optimum values for biological, chemical, physical, and engineering requirements are estimated for both farm structures and the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera, the proposed OFEF crop plant. From these data, requirements, and limitations, preliminary site selection criteria are established. Selection candidate Phase 1 OFEF and future farm sites are given after a thorough review of pertinent data and literature. It is determined that within the area studied, the southern California offshore region from approximately 32 deg 30 min N to 34 deg 30 min. N is best suited for siting preliminary Ocean Farms. Detailed maps and tables of currents, ocean temperatures, winds, nutrient concentrations and other parameters are presented. (Author)

Bowhead whale behavior in relation to seismic exploration, Alaskan Beaufort Sea, autumn 1981 by M. A Fraker( Book )

3 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The behaviour of bowhead whales in the eastern part of the Alaskan Beaufort Sea or near the Alaska/Yukon border were observed from an aircraft from Sept. 12 to Oct. 15, 1981. Some observations were made when the whales were exposed to noise impulses from seismic vessels and compared with those that were not
Time Constants and Learning Curves of LMS Adaptive Filters by M. J Shensa( Book )

2 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This paper treats the convergence of adaptive LMS filters and, in particular, the adaptive line enhancer (ALE). The learning curves of such a filter are a sum of exponentially decaying modes with time constants given by the eigenvalues of the input correlation matrix and the relative initial magnitudes given by the projections of the filter on the eigenvectors. It is shown that, for large filter lengths, a simple correspondence may be set up between the discrete and continuous cases. Indexed by frequency, the eigenvalues of the correlation matrix correspond to the magnitude of the power spectrum, and the projections onto the eigenvectors to the filter transfer function. A detailed analysis is carried out for single pole spectra and evaluated through a computer simulation. In general, the techniques developed provide a physical context, i.e., the signal spectrum, in which to evaluate convergence. Thus, it is possible, with varying degrees of accuracy depending on knowledge of the input spectrum, to predict the convergence behavior of the system in general. (Author)
