This volume provides an authoritative overview of the field of interpersonal processes. The study of interpersonal relationships makes a qualitative distinction between relationships in which people feel a special responsibility for one another's needs (communal relationships) and those in which they do not feel such a special responsibility but give benefits with the expectation of receiving specific benefits in repayment (exchange relationships). Communal relationships are often exemplified by friendships, romantic relationships and family relationships. Exchange relationships are often exemplified by strangers meeting for the first time, acquaintances or business partners. The ideas and research into communal and exchange relationships are discussed throughout the nine major sections of the volume on cognition/attribution, social motivation, affect/emotion, social influence and comparison, self and identity, methods, applications and future developments
