Courtly culture : literature and society in the high Middle Ages by Joachim Bumke ( Book )

Every aspect of "courtly culture" comes to life in Joachim Bumke's extraordinarily rich and well documented presentation. A renowned medievalist with an encyclopedic knowledge of original sources and a passion for history, Bumke overlooks no detail, from the material realities of aristocratic society -- the castles and clothing, weapons and transportation, food, drink, and table etiquette -- to the behavior prescribed and practiced at tournaments, knighting ceremonies, and great princely feasts. The courtly knight and courtly lady, and the transforming idea of courtly love, are seen through the literature that celebrated them, and we learn how literacy among an aristocratic laity spread from France through Germany and became the basis of a cultural revolution. At the same time, Bumke clearly challenges those who have comfortably confused the ideals of courtly culture with their expression in courtly society

Die Blutstropfen im Schnee : über Wahrnehmung und Erkenntnis im "Parzival" Wolframs von Eschenbach by Joachim Bumke ( Book )
11 editions published in 2001 in German and held by 169 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The study proceeds from a close reading of the 'blood in the snow' episode in Wolfram von Eschenbach's 'Parzival'. The perception and knowledge-formation processes described in this scene are interpreted against the backdrop of early scholastic theories of perception and epistemology. The second part of the study inquires more generally into the significance of perception and knowledge in Wolfram's work, exploring this issue first in terms of the plot and then from the narrator perspective. This ultimately poses the question of the poetics of the 'Parzival' romance

"Parzival is a major medieval German epic poem attributed to the poet Wolfram von Eschenbach, written in the Middle High German language. The poem is commonly dated circa the first quarter of the 13th century. The poem is, in part, an adaptation of Chretien de Troyes? Perceval, the Story of the Grail and mainly centers on the Arthurian hero Parzival (Percival in English) and his long quest for the Holy Grail, following his initial failure to achieve it. A long middle section is devoted to Parzival's friend Gawan and his adventures defending himself from a false murder charge and winning the hand of the maiden Orgeluse. The poem continues to be read in Middle High German and translated into modern languages around the world. Among the most striking elements of the text are the scope of its plot and its emphasis on the virtues of compassion and spiritual questioning." -- from www.ulike.net (Nov. 8, 2010)
