For many opera fans tenor Mario Del Monaco simply was Otello. His brilliant, ringing voice was enormous, but he could also scale it down to a haunting whisper. This is a performance of gripping dramatic power that will never be forgotten. Fortunately this broadcast also includes the renowned Victoria del los Angeles as a melting Desdemona, and the great Verdi baritone Leonard Warren as Iago

Even being the world's greatest and most admired actress doesn't guarantee that the handsome young man you love is safe from other women--especially when you have a conniving Princess as a rival. On the other hand, there is something marvelously romantic about being killed by a bouquet of poisoned violets. Montserrat Caballé is the definitive Adriana, the actress of the title, opposite José Carreras as the object of her affection, Maurizio. Fiorenza Cossotto is the delightfully imperious Princess di Bouillon

A temple virgin, Adalgisa, is young and beautiful. Pollione must have her. He has importuned the young virgin to run away with him to Rome, and she has finally agreed. When Norma learns of Pollione's faithlessness, she threatens to kill the two children. Before she can do this, the Druid temple priests apprehend Pollione as he attempts to abscond with their sacred virgin, Adalgisa. The priests build a pyre to burn Pollione to death. Norma relents. Instead of killing the children, she blames herself for her misery and climbs onto the pyre to die with Pollione

Del Monaco and Tebaldi sang Chenier together for the first time on March 6 1949, at La Scala, Milan, when both were just beginning their great international careers. They later performed the opera in Rome, and at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955. We are especially grateful that this 1961 televised performance from Tokyo has survived. In addition to being the only visual document of the two singers together in actual performance, it also proved to be the final occasion on which Tebaldi's Maddalena faced death at the side of del Monaco's Chenier-- the two never again appeared together in this opera
