William James : the center of his vision by Daniel W Bjork( Book )

24 editions published between 1988 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 972 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

William James' contributions in psychology and philosophy greatly influenced both European and American thought, perhaps because James--as no one before him--expressed the universal appeal of the American mind. In his imaginative new biography Daniel Bjork goes beyond simply reciting the facts of James' life and thought; instead, he integrates the two. James once remarked that the "industry of building up an author's meaning out of separate texts leads nowhere unless you have grasped his center of vision by an act of imagination." In the spirit of that statement, Bjork seeks to reconstruct James' creative life the way it happened from James' own perspective and experience, to capture him in the act of originating the "center of his vision." /// This reconstruction uses largely unpublished diaries, notebooks, and family correspondence, including the first extensive use of James' letters to his wife, Alice Howe Gibbens James. The letters reveal James' views of his colleagues at Harvard, his opinions of other great thinkers of the day, and his relations with members of his family. Bjork thoroughly develops James' relationship with his wife, revealing his emotional dependence on her. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved)
