Matthew Jouët, of French lineage, lived in Louisa, Hanover (earlier New Kent) County, Virginia in 1733, and was a direct ancestor of John Jouett of the Revolutionary War. Captain John in 1781 warned Governor Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia legislature of an approaching British army in time to let most escape capture. Captain John moved to Kentucky (probably in or near Lexington). Matthew Harris Jouett was a son of Captain John, and the father of James Edward Jouett, who became a rear admiral in the United States Navy
