The star of redemption by Franz Rosenzweig( Book )

186 editions published between 1921 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 2,216 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Star of Redemption is widely recognized as a key document modern existential thought and a significant contribution to wish theology in the twentieth century. An affirmation of what Rosenzweig called "the new thinking", the work ensconces common sense in the place of abstract, conceptual philosophizing and posits the validity of the concrete, individual human being over that of "humanity" in general. Fusing philosophy and theology, it assigns both Judaism and Christianity distinct but equally important roles in the spiritual structure of the world, and finds in both biblical religions approaches toward a comprehension of reality. Resuming the anti-Hegelian revolt of Schopenhauer, Feuerbach, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche, Rosenzweig repudiates the attempt by German idealism to reduce to one essence the three elements of reality: God, the world, and man. In The Star of Redemption, he sets forth a system in which these elements are shown to be independent, irreducible from each other, and linked through the "paths" of creation, revelation, and redemption

Understanding the sick and the healthy : a view of world, man, and God by Franz Rosenzweig( Book )

34 editions published between 1953 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 534 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Franz Rosenzweig, one of the century's great Jewish thinkers, wrote his gem of a "little book" in 1921 as a more accessible precis of his famous Star of Redemption. An elegant introduction to Rosenzweig's "new thinking," Understanding the Sick and the Healthy was written for a lay audience and takes the form of an ironic narrative about convalescence. With superb simplicity and beauty, it puts forth an important critique of the nineteenth-century German Idealist philosophical tradition and expresses a powerful vision of Jewish religion. Harvard's Hilary Putnam provides a new introduction to this classic work for a contemporary audience. Readers with an interest in Jewish philosophy, twentieth-century philosophy, or the philosophy of religion will find Rosenzweig's "little book" a treasure."--Jacket

Scripture and translation by Martin Buber( Book )

7 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 461 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Scripture and Translation is the first English translation of an essential work on translation theory and the modern literary study of the Bible. First published in Germany in 1936 as Die Schrift und ihre Verdeutschung, the book grew out of Buber and Rosenzweig's work on an innovative and still controversial German translation of the Hebrew Bible. Rather than provide an idiomatic rendering, the Buber-Rosenzweig translation recasts the German language on the model of biblical Hebrew by attempting to reproduce the spoken quality, structure, and ordering of poetic devices found in the original texts. These essays articulate the rationale for the translation, both in theoretical terms and through close readings of specific texts. This edition also includes the first publication in any language of Martin Buber's essay "The How and Why of Our Biblical Translation."

Righteousness and divine grace; (3) the place of the Hebrew Bible in Christianity; and (4) the role of the church as the New Israel vis-a-vis the Jews as the Old Israel "according to the flesh." While the selections in this volume are for the most part "forthright statements by forthright men," Professor Rothschild offers a fascinating glimpse in his introduction of some of the private reservations of some of these Jewish thinkers, and even blunt criticisms, that never
