'Lakme' is een in India spelende opera van een componist die vooral bekend werd door zijn balletten 'Sylvia' en 'Coppelia'. De vocale delen 'Lakme, ton doux regard se voila', 'Ah, ou va le jeune indoue' (bijgenaamd de 'Klokjesaria'), 'Tu m'as donne le plus doux reve' en 'Viens, Mallika' worden wel eens apart uitgevoerd. Het laatste stuk is een duet dat plotseling populairwerd toen het als muziek in een t.v.-spotje van Veilig Verkeer Nederland werd gebruikt. De 'Air de danses' (of 'Ballet der Bajaderen') wordt ook wel apart gespeeld

She is later arrested, charged with prostitution, and deported to Louisiana. Des Grieux accompanies her and during an escape attempt she dies in his arms
